@aroc3435 wrote:@alicedee I think you are wise to be concerned. I feel these shortfalls in supplies are going to continue. I am trying to keep ahead without going overboard. I have enough shelf stable items in terms of food, condiments, and seasonings.
Also have managed to stay ahead in terms of cleaning items but without giving in to outrageous price gouging I've seen in some online prices.
The main thing I've found to keep my sanity is to avoid giving in to a feeling of despair and to try to keep some perspective.
People have lived through worse times in history and this supply issue, though very worrisome, is definitely better than experiencing an actual famine.
For instance, I've been re-reading the novel The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck.
I am focused on managing this senior household of two and keeping our spirits buoyed by looking at all the positives we still enjoy in our lives despite the continued limitations on, or complete absence of, many of our everyday routines we still have to forgo for the foreseable future.
Courage, all--we'll get through this.

I am getting extra tuna, canned chicken breasts, some broth more than I normally would, more tomatoes, peas, spinach and corn in cans, and a bigger sack of rice and pinto beans! And a bigger jar of peanut butter! ![]()
This is for several reasons: Increase in virus cases, flu, or bad weather for extended periods. I think there may be times where we will want or need to stay close to home this winter, so I'm just putting a little more in the pantry and will start consuming it after Christmas!

I'm doing the same. Got Knorr's bullion cubes, rice and pasta sides. Lots of Sunbelt granola bars. Will get more TP and canned goods too. Not just for covid, but we can get bad snow storms with low temps that make driving hazardous. Funny thing is my store only seems to be selling their own paper brands. I can't find Sparkle or Bounty paper towels. They're the best IMO. Oh well.

On Labor Day my husband and I went to Target when they opened. Disenfectant spray was being stocked and the stocker was the most popular person in the store. There was a limit on the disenfectant spray.

I live in a tourist area where our population triples in the summer so shelves are looking better as they are not so many here buying. They would buy what they could not find at home. They used to moan about our high grocery prices and bring their own food and supplies Up North but we have a Wal-Mart Super Center and a competitive grocery store chain that carries good meats. This store though, according to the Lead checker ,has only been receiving 60% of their stock.
I even tried going in the beginning of the week and on different days? I know deliveries come Sunday night and Wednesdays. They had a fantastic profitable summer as have a friend who works part time in the Meat Department. Meat especially beef ,is higher priced. People were hoarding hamburger and they had to limit it as well as other meats. Sometimes bare meat coolers. Shelves look fuller and an abundant supply of hand washes, sanitizer and masks. Even the gas stations are selling these items.
I live alone, but close to town. I stock up on over the counter cold and flu medications as if I am sick I don't want to have to go out. Sometimes stores are out of cough and cold items if a bug hits. On the other hand, I don't have a family to worry about to feed and supply.

@aroc3435 I always enjoy your posts and this is one of the best yet.
DH and I were talking about this just a few minutes ago. We do the best we can for us and leave the rest.
We didn't cause this, we cannot control it, and we cannot fix it. All we can do is follow guidelines and carry on.
We are comfortable with what we do; and we are sad for those who died or had after effects down the road. Yet that does not mean we cannot be hopeful.
Thank you for your post; it really brings home that the focus is on each of us to do what we can. Forget about the misquotes and all the other fear tactics.
This challenge is daunting but we will make it. I have no doubt that in the end we will mourn the losses but we will also be able to enjoy the sunshine once again.

One shortage that I'd noticed when this all began was this: Linguine. Months later, linguine is still hard to find.
We finally located some, so all is well. But if you prefer linguine, grab it when you see it.

The only shortages in our city are Clorox products--wipes, sanitizer, even bleach.....Lysol can be found in some unexpected places.... I wonder if soup will be a target of shortages with cool weather and flu season coming up---hope not...
