@garmer wrote:I am truly, truly concerned for all the people I see defying evacuation orders, both on TV and on this forum. This storm is not going to be like any other. Idk, some must feel it's all hype for ratings or something.
Fla. just sticks out there, so exposed and so vulnerable, it's going to be bad. Please leave if advised, before it's too late.
@garmerYes, this. There's a radio host/commentator telling folks this is all hype to help sell bottled water and have people stock up on supplies. Absolute nonsense, but this is the stuff he's spewing.

Hello Everyone. Thank you for the prayers and good wishes. To those who don't understand staying in your home, I am NOT in an evacuation or flood zone. We have been told to stay in place. The roads are crazy, there is no gas, there are no flights, or rooms available. I tried getting a ticket on Tuesday, Wednesday and yesterday, but it was not to be. Did anyone see the airports - CRAZY. I know you mean well when you say to get out, but sometimes you can't. I also won't leave my pet alone or put him in a shelter. The shelters are overwhelmed with people dumping their animals. That is horrifying to me. So yes, sometimes you really do need to keep the faith and prepare the best way you know how. I am as prepared as I'm going to be. This monster keeps shifting so no one really knows. Imagine all the people thinking they're safe and it curves. It is what it is. We can't control the weather. If I could I'd have sunny 70 degree days everyday with 50 at night for good sleeping
Stay safe everyone - I'll check back as often as I can.

@nycgrlAre you in Miami, like @SouthFlorida321? I'm trying to keep all of you straight, because I will be thinking of each of you (and worrying) as I watch the news coverage this weekend. Even though my immediate relatives have evacuated, we have a number of Florida connections and will be watching non-stop. My DIL is a St. Pete native with a lot of family still in the area; she and my son lived in Fla. for years and have many friends there. Being a lifelong resident of hurricane county myself, my heart goes out to all of you!

Hey @shoesnbags, @nycgrl lives about 50 miles north of me in Palm Beach County. I am actually at the very northern end of Miami-Dade County - only 1 mile from Broward County. 9 miles from Ft. Lauderdale. That's my airport. Hi @nycgrl how you holding up??

Sending many prayers, hugs, positive thoughts from PA. I've been thinking of all who might even be near this storm and praying that by some miracle that it heads out to sea away from hurting anyone else. Please stay safe, and don't take any unnecessary chances! Hugs to all, pinky
PS We need a big hug emotie!!

I just saw that Manatee county has issued a mandatory evacuation order for zone A and mobile homes. As I said before, they've admitted that they don't have the capacity in their shelters to accomodate even this "small" part of the population, but have now indicated that they're going to try and open more shelters. Where are people supposed to go if they don't have someone inland that they can stay with and there's no room in the shelters? Hotels are full. Every remaining flight out of SRQ is cram packed full. I-75 northbound is a parking lot and there's no gas. The vast majority of the folks I know out on my little island (which is entirely in zone A) have already packed up, boarded up and left. When you buy island property you know what the risks are. But this just seems like poor planning on the part of the county administrators.

@SouthFlorida321 @shoesnbags - I'm OK. Exhausted. I got really lucky - I ran to the store and was able to get 3 cases of water, bread, bananas, more peanut butter and jelly (I lived on that for 2 weeks with Wilma), and some junk food. @SouthFlorida321 how are you holding up? Looks like it's starting to go west. You are not that far from me - I'm in South County - first exit in Boca.
I'm doing laundry and still packing. No evacuations where I am thankfully. I also have a detective living next door and his family is staying.

@nycgrl - understand And I think Admonishments from keyboard couch sitters dictating orders is uncalled for, rude. Will be looking for your updates and others @SouthFlorida321 et al
