@wagirl wrote:I normally would not pay that much for a cake----however---there is an Italian bakery that makes the most incredible Bavarian iced cake that I would buy for that amount!!!! It is AMAZING !! Maybe once a year for a special dinner---yes, I would!!!!
that sounds amazing! yum! I eat cake once, maybe twice a year- either my birthday and/or one of my parent's birthdays. So when I do, I want to eat only the best tasting cake. I don't like wasting calories and fat on something that is only average at best.

My quest is to find THE best carrot cake in the world..at pretty much any cost!
I used to hate carrot cake now I just love it. Not sure why?? Some are amazing though, with fresh pineapple pieces or coconut shavings or whatever. Yum.

I have ordered Junior's and they are FANTASTIC. One less thing that I have to make during the holidays. The last one I purchased was for xmas and it had the airbrushed old fashioned Santa painted in it.....it was stunning and delicious!

Smith Island comes up every time there is a "cake" thread. I think I'm going to order one.
Are they moist?

@bri20 It depends. I've tried many and they all were a huge disapointment. Other than going to Smith Island and buying a slice there from a 100 year old pub, I wouldn't waste the money. : (
If you don't mind ordering directly from those who make it on the Island, then you'll get a slice of heaven. : )

For special occasions .... or if you want to send something to someone many miles away, this can make a lot of sense.
I recently bought some birthday cupcakes at a top notch local bakery ... $3.50 each, and an 8 in cake was $43.
If you don't want to spend that much money ... don't. There's always Duncan Hines on your grocer's shelf.

@Hayfield wrote:I do my own baking, so I generally don't order cakes. I did recently order a Smith Island Cake from Maryland for my dear friend's 50th wedding anniversary, I live in VA and she lives in PA and, with shipping, I paid almost $50 for a cake that would feel 8 people, the larger cake was even more, shippng was high. My friend said it was the best cake she ever had. So, yes, I'll spend that kind of money on speical occasions and/or when I can't be there for family/friends.

Smith Island have the best cakes. I have tried them all, lol! However, I resort to two of my favorites. The Banana cake and their coconut cake. They do the 10 layers. The coconut cake Is of the old fashioned cooked frosting type. The cake ingredients are so fresh and high quality, never using artificial favors. I never get that after taste, and you taste the quality in every bite. Jmho. I have given them as a gift and people love them! The smith island cake could easily make 30 slices oR more as it is tall and big
