My best advice is that you let your son handle all of this and you leave it all alone. Don't "Mommy" him or his eBay business at all !

If he is old enough to have the account and do business, then he is old enough to handle all of the problems, experiences, etc, without the guidance or assistance of dear old "Mommy".

Don't "infantilize " your son. Let him be his own man, even if he is just beginning and has to learn the hard way. He will be much better off in the future !!

He can ask his own questions, Mom. Let him be. Please don't stand over his shoulder monitoring his business.

Wow.... just wow.

Wow is right!

triple wow!

Re: Question for current e bay sellers

Update: It happened again. My son thinks it's because he's selling an electronic item. This time he got emails that looked like they were coming from e Bay and paypal saying the buyer had paid but it would be pending shipment.

At the very bottom of the email was a name and Nigerian address. Weird thing was that he has an app on his phone for e Bay and paypal and these didn't register the payment so that's what made him suspicious. He got emails that the sale was done but no notification through his apps. He forwarded the emails to me and they really LOOK just like they came from eBay and Paypal but they're a scam - he called both and verified they're fake.

Sheesh. I've never had a problem buying and selling on e bay and he's had this happen twice.

Hopefully this is good ""on the job experience"" for your son. I wish him well in his endeavors and this type of occurrence is the exception rather than the rule.

I've read a little on the eBay help forums, when searching for something else . . . how fraught the electronics buying and selling is . . . high dollar high value items . . . you ship a perfectly working item . . . they return a broken & ruined item and eBay stands behind the buyer. I couldn't do it. I would not have the patience to deal with all the dishonesty . . . I've had one bad buyer in my years of dabbling in eBay with collectibles, he/she, I think it was a he, claimed "not as described" and smoke damage and tried to get me to refund partial price with the promise to leave positive feedback, I knew it was false so I said return it . . . they fought that too . . . finally they returned it, they had cut open the bottom of the box . . . re-taped and marked top & label refused return to sender. eBay still sided with buyer. I said you can't do that, against post office regulations, so either you opened it and broke their regulations and cheated the post office out of return postage to see the supposed smoke damage OR you didn't open it and cheat the post office . . . can't have it both ways. Even with photos and photos of the inside of the items mint box . . . white as snow. Then left negative feedback which with a phone call to eBay I was able to get removed . . . as they had "blackmailed" with the feedback threat in the multiple messages sent back thru the eBay mail system. It just made me so mad and I lost a little sleep that week over the undeserved feedback and treatment . . . So no way could I sell electronics on eBay! Sellers are at a disadvantage between eBay and PayPal and now with the ridiculous 180 day return policy with PayPal. Heck only Costco and Kohl's do that . . . or more . . . and NOT on electronics for sure.

Thanks for the info Qwackertoo. Sorry you had a bad experience with e bay. It's always shocking how dishonest some people can be. I've heard folks complain online about e bay's bad treatment of sellers and favoritism toward buyers.

Do you have a recommendation for where to sell electronics?

IF it were me . . . I'd be tempted to sell thru Amazon. I haven't ever tried it but plan to soon for some of daughters college textbooks before they get replaced by a new edition and are pretty much worthless after that.

I'd try to read some reviews and forums about selling on Amazon. That is where we buy so much stuff, 70+ orders last year . . . and some from Amazon, some from their sellers.

and p.s. I would IF I were him, set up any future auctions for only bidders in the USA and no shipping out of the country whatsoever with electronics. Especially electronics it seems.

Re: Question for current e bay sellers

Navigating ebay can be like navigating a mine field. Be careful of buyers using freight forwarding services. Asian buyers are notorious for this. Sellers think they are sending their merchandise to someone in the US because the mailing address is in California or New York but are unknowingly sending their goods to China (for example) by cargo ship. Upon receipt the buyer will claim the item was damaged or fake. Sellers usually don't accept refunds but to avoid bad feedback will request that item be returned. The buyer switches the item received for a fake. Unless the seller can prove the item is not the one from the transaction ebay will side with the buyer and refund the buyer by withdrawing funds from the seller's Paypal account. Seller is out money and merchandise. If you sell on ebay take a lot of good photos. It's sometimes the only proof a seller has of what was sold.

Qwackertoo I would have taken it to the post office and told them about the fraud and taken emails that proved the buyer had opened it!
