Question for current e bay sellers

My son just sold his first item on e bay. He received an email from the buyer today that said:

Hi. payment sent, it will be pending balance till the item is shipped and delivered...When you can send me (item)?

It's been a while since I've sold stuff on e bay however, I recently made 2 purchases and of course, paid in full for the items before the seller sent them to me. There is no record of payment in son's pay pal account so the guy hasn't paid yet. There is no email from e bay saying payment has been made and without that email, son doesn't have the real contact info on the buyer (name, address).

Wondering if this is a scam attempt? Buyer has only 1 other positive comment that just appeared today and the wording of the message is incorrect. Obviously I told son even if he gets the buyer's contact info, do not send the item until he's paid in full (which includes shipping).

Advice? Opinions?

Thanks for any help you can give.

One suggestion is that you can call paypal to see if he is a registered user; if it is a scam you can find that out.

I would send nothing until the entire payment is sent.

Sounds fishy to me.

I would only ship to a verified eBay & PayPal address.

Re: Question for current e bay sellers

New sellers have a hold on their payments. However, they should still be able to see the transaction on their PayPal page.

If your son doesn't see the payment, make sure he doesn't ship. There are buyers out there who look for new sellers in order to scam them. Your son can open a UID 48 hours after end of auction/BIN and close it 4 days later.

As for the verified address, that's no longer a requirement for seller protection. Your son must, though, ship to the address listed on the PayPal transaction in order to be protected by PayPal. Online viewable proof of delivery is also required for seller protection.

I would report the buyer to eBay right away. I've sold on eBay for several years and never had this happen. It's definitely a scam.

Re: Question for current e bay sellers

My best advice is that you let your son handle all of this and you leave it all alone. Don't "Mommy" him or his eBay business at all !

If he is old enough to have the account and do business, then he is old enough to handle all of the problems, experiences, etc, without the guidance or assistance of dear old "Mommy".

Don't "infantilize " your son. Let him be his own man, even if he is just beginning and has to learn the hard way. He will be much better off in the future !!

He can ask his own questions, Mom. Let him be. Please don't stand over his shoulder monitoring his business.

I agree. Contact eBay. A record of communicating with eBay will be in his favor if there is an issue with this transaction.
