@Sookie Says. Thank you so much for your thoughts. I know you didn't mean to denigrate anyone but I didn't want someone taking it the wrong way and jumping all over you.
The good part...I've come to terms with my life. I live alone, but always with several beloved dogs, and am at peace. I miss my son every day of the year but at least he too is now at peace. I have no stress, problems, worries or concerns so I'm a lot better off than most people.

This is a MEDICAL matter. She and you need to talk to her doctor, rather than someone on this site.

@Kachina624 I read your post and I wanted to tell you how sorry I am that you’ve had this sadness in your life. I know real people are behind these names on this forum—-real people that have sometimes experienced hardship and sorrow in their lives. I’m so sorry for the loss of your son and sadness with your husband. It’s great that you have dogs (collies, right?)—-and I’m sure it’s great for the dogs. 😇

This is only my thoughts based on knowing a couple of people that went through this. I think many alcoholics really process the sugar in alcohol and other things very differently from most people.
Craving sugar is normal since they are missing the alcohol but it's likely harder to deal with compared to someone else trying to cut out sugar. Most people that decide to drop sugar from their diets can do it fairly easily with the cravings not lasting that long. Is suspect alcholics or sugar addicts have a different process that affects serotonin.
I don't have any issues with alcohol but carbs cause this problem for me. I crave them and the more I eat them the worse it gets. Like I never hit the normal mental ability to know I've had enough.
She should definitely talk to her sponsor or bring it up in a meeting. They might not have brought it up in rehab. I know in some cases they will tell people not to try to break another bad habit while they are trying to stop drinking. A friend of mine was specifically told not to quit cigarettes at the time because it would be too mucn.

I've read a few books about sugar, and yes, that was mentioned. The relation of one to the other.

Both my brother and sister were alcoholics - big time! Of course, there were a couple of slips "off the wagon" but with continued attendance at AA meetings they did very well.
Yes, craving candy, sugar is quite normal. A lifestyle change is a must as far as nutrition. I can't help you with the achy joints, sorry.
Unfortunately, my brother relapsed after about 20-25 years and it was full blown, worse than ever. My sister remained sober.
I would recommend Al-Anon for both you and your husband so you can also recognize the different phases or what to do with certain situations.
And, remember, you did not cause this problem. She is an adult and must be responsible for her own actions. Getting a job with benefits would be a place to start. Maybe a physical exam and exercise program would help her.

Yes, people with alcohol problems are known for craving sugar. Probably not everyone. I have no personal experience myself since I'm not an alcoholic and rarely drink.

@Kachina624 Thank you! I really appreciate you having my back. I am glad to know you at peace & have your dogs with you. You will always be in my prayers & positive thoughts, if there is anything I can do for you, pls don't hesitate. You are one of the strongest women I have had the opportunity to know & I wish you nothing but the best life has to offer!

I know most on here are saying that sugary cravings go hand in hand with sobriety but is it possible she could have a medical issue like diabetes? Perhaps she'd want to get checked and not just assume she is craving sweets because she is an alcoholic.

Yes, I am aware....I was asking for real life advice from those that might have enountered the issue with a family member...I am not dumb enough (nor is step daughter) to get medical advice from a forum....real life experience is SOMETIMES better than what a medical professional may tell you.
Case in point DH is on blood thinners...he is freezing cold all the time, doctor said it had nothing to do with the medication, but others he has mentioned it to have the same problem since taking the drug....
