If anyone is interested in replying.....I know it is a personal subject.
My step daughter had a drinking problem and went thru rehab and is back home, working, etc. She mentioned to me today that she has been craving sugar, chocolate, anything sweet. She thinks it is related to the drinking problem she had....does anyone know if this might be true?
She is also having a lot of achey joints....she does not know where this pain is coming from, but she has put on some weight, that might be the issue.
thanks.

Has she been overeating?
Sometimes with addition, when one "coping mechanism" is removed, someone finds another one to take its place.

My step-father has a severe drinking problem .. when he went on the
wagon he craved sugar terribly ... my mother said they kept Sara lee
in business ....so i am not surprised to hear this ....Oh yea chocolate too ....
I find the more white flour etc. i eat the more my joints ache ...so i think
it is probably the foods she is eating to have put on that weight ....
Being addicted to sugar myself .. i wish her all the best ....good wishes

I honestly don't know but I can't eat sugary stuff like I did before when I was younger and I really miss it.
But I found this article

I'm no expert on this subject, but I remember in the movie"Days of Wine and Roses," the wife had been a chocoholic before she became addicted to alcohol- And, the counselor told the husband there was a link.

@lolakimono.... I do not think so but she does not live with us, so I don't see what she eats.
She told me her appetite had not been good. She said the cravings for sweets comes and goes and her budget it pretty limited I would be surprised if she was buying a lot of junk food. I sent a bunch of leftovers home with her today, I don't think she has a good diet.
The achey joints is a new symptom too....I would say she might have put on an extra 40-50 lbs. and she is going thru menopause!

I googled sugar addiction and alcoholism. I understand your step daughter isn’t drinking anymore but craving sugar is very common according to the articles I read.
The aches and pains could be part of the body detoxing.
I wish your SD and family all the best.

I have a friend who is a psychologist working as a substance abuse counselor. She said that yes, it is common to crave sweets when you give up drinking. There's a lot of sugar in alcohol. There's a wealth of information available out there, but here's just one article:
