Darn this getting old.  I'm not going to any parties except for Thanksgiving dinner for the family at my house. I don't even know anyone who is giving a party.  None of the other widows I know and live near  -  five on my block counting me -  feel that we want to celebrate sans our beloved husbands.  Heck we don't even have anywhere to go apple picking or hit the pumpkin patch.  New Year's Eve is also filled with questions. Who do we kiss at midnight?  Maybe a photograph?

@Perkup

Many years ago when I lived in California there were five women on our street of all different ages, three widows, two divorced and we got together every year near Christmas.  Every one brought appetizers, got dressed up and we had a nice visit.  We took turns hosting it.

The hosts aren't only selling items, they are selling a lifestyle.  Most people don't have the type of lifestyle they are talking about.  Some do.  Some get depressed that they don't have the type of social engagements the hosts talk about and some thank their lucky stars they don't because it's not their thing.

Exactly.

Commercials and advertisements do the same thing.  They paint pictures of warm family scenes, people with carefree lives, etc.  Most people do not live the way life is depicted on TV or in the movies or in commercials.  QVC does the same thing.  The result often is that people compare their lives to these fake ones, and feel sad or inferior or jealous.

As you said, they're selling a lifestyle.  And for some reason, it makes people buy.

@ NameAlreadyTaken it sounds exactly like me. If you can't post your true feelings ,what is the point of posting?  I didn't say anyone had to agree, or single them out, for feeling differently than I do. It looks like from the amount of hearts I got ,I am not the only one that feels this way

@Ms tyrion2  I do not know what to say - I have never seen you mention it - let alone bring it up a lot.  I am so sorry for the battle you are fighting.  I wish more of the rest of us "healthy" people (and also others battling various illnesses) had half of your attitude, positivity and outlook.  I truly wish you the best and prove your doctors' projections very wrong. Heart

Re: Parties, parties, parties?

That would be a no for me.  After I retired, I  go to very few parties.  I was always obliged to go to the office Christmas party which I really dreaded.  It was really a relief when all that stopped for me.
