I'm not sure if my bank charges for mailing statements but I've been getting them online for years. We go through periods where I don't feel my USPS mail is safe; I would get them some months, some months not. Most every company I do business with charges to mail bills or statements, even our county offices where we pay taxes charges for paper bills.

Im with you, I have little faith in USPS with all the mail delivered to the WRONG mailbox....With good software security on laptop I feel online is safer!

I don't see the need for paper statements any longer.  It's just something I'm going to wind up shredding anyway.  I can access my accounts 24 hours a day.  If I need to have a paper copy, I can just print out what I need.

And in the case of my in-laws both of them 90+ years old, don't have a computer and never had one, don't know how to use the internet, don't have a smart phone.  Then what?

@CelticCrafter  Then I assume they will continue to get paper statements mailed to them.

My bank charges for a statement but will print it in the branch for free.

@Bri369 And if I get a paper copy and need it a year later I will have 11 statements filed neatly.  All but the one I need.  Is that not a law or something?????

All banks are charging for mailing paper statements, they just don't state it by putting it into whatever fees they charge. It's all figured into everything.

@RespectLife, problem is I don't have a printer and wouldn't use one except for that. Guess I'll just wait and see what happens at my bank.

My two banks give us the choice of online or paper statements and they both charge a small fee for paper statements.  It has to be paper or electronic, not both. I took electronic but not because of the $3.00 (maybe $5.00) fee.  I did it for the security aspect.  I don't want my banking information on paper or going through the post office or sitting in my mailbox.  Not to long ago, a new mail carrier put someone else's mail in my mailbox and it was her bills and what looked like a bank statement.  Scary stuff!  My banks have apps. They both require passwords and one also requires a one time security code.  I still have paper because I can print them if I choose to or I can convert to a pdf and put them in a file on my computer.

You're right its pretty scary what USPS can misdeliver to someone else----Ive gotten someone else's:

Jury Summons

Mail that said "Your Auto Insurance Renewal ID is enclosed"

Mail from DMV

Medical insurance bill

Packges

I pay nothing online and I get all my statements regarding my accounts in the mail.  None of the financial institutions charge a thing for the documents.   Since I was a jr. in high school when I opened my first checking and savings account I have loved writing the checks and getting the mail.  Still do.

@beckyb1012  I am guessing you are a boomer like I am?  I am 67 this week and also write checks for most bills when I can.  I think check writing will be gone when we Boomers die off.... it is what I grew up with....the youngsters today would never write a check😄

When we rented an apartment a few years ago and wrote a check for the security deposit, the agent was impressed!!  He said the young people do not know how to write out a check.  I'm sure now people can just transfer the money via their smartphones!!

I balance my paper statement every month, but for some reason can't do it when trying on line. I don't know why I have trouble with doing that. Hopefully, my bank won't do that.

Me too @catter70

My bank charges a fee to mail statements also, and I refuse to pay it.

I get the statement online and print it....then balance the old fasion way!

I haven't "balanced" anything in decades.  Just eyeball the statement to make sure everything is OK and done!

I have started wondering if the non check writing for them is due to only their thumbs working and not the other parts of their hand?

@occasionalrain  I don't think it's only a way for businesses to pass on the cost to their customers.  IMO, younger people want things right away.  In the time it takes to write and mail a check, they can pay a dozen bills.

My greatest fear is that a smartphone, which I currently do not have, will become a necessity and every transaction will be done with it.
