Those updates contain patches that improve security which correct / protect you from identified bugs or security breaches. If you only use it for " games " and not apps that you use for important activities....???
Could be very risky if you're unlucky.

@Desertdi Include more "Apple's" in you diet. You will be so happy and no cake emergencies. Even an IPad 10, which were going for $250 recently, might be an option.
Also, think about trading in while they still have value--which saves you the misery of your IOS getting too old. Or of dealing with the Non-IOS world updates.
There are no computer stores left anywhere near where I live...except for Best Buy®.......and those people are such aggressive sales folks, that they tried to get me to buy a GAME CONSOLE. I am an OLD LADY!!!! for pete's sake.
Edited to add: I once had an Apple™ at a place where I worked. It was so ANCIENT that it had a "printer" that looked like an electric typewriter, complete with a fabric ribbon... di

@Desertdi Old in body maybe but not in spirit!!!
I do feel your pain with the updates and slow startups. I bought a Mac Air laptop in 2011. Husband/IT guy (career), looked down upon the lowly Air until he saw me typing away while he was waiting on updates all too often!
How I did enjoy that. He was green with envy and finally (to my glee) switched.
We now buy all Apple on line from Apple (well the IPad deals we grabbed from Amazon), and trade in. Works for us. But whatever you have, to us doing trade-in's simply makes life a lot easier. And we are old. Need easy whenever we can get it!

Why I switched to Apple long ago.
Hated Windows

@Desertdi PUT THE CAKE DOWN!
You don't want to end things like this!![]()

I just hate all the changes that accompany the updates. For years we were not permitted to update our computers because our reservation system had not approved the update so I got used to have the auto-update turned off. I have a tech guy that I can reach out to when the need arises, I'm sure he wants to run away when my number pops up on his phone! I know nothing about apple other than my phone but have thought about converting. How do you deal with Word and Excel?

We use a very old HP Desktop at home, it will not allow us to install Windows 11, so my DH who is a very good IT guy says we will just leave it as is.

@Desertdi. Just be glad you don't have AOL and also have to talk to someone in India, in which case you'd need to visit a liquor store too.

Ha! I have a $20 Trac Fone from Walmart, since I only use it in the car. I HAVE talked to that lady in India.
And yeah...I had to go thru the liquor department to get to the bakery. The Jack Daniels was tempting...until I saw the price tag (!!!) di
