Re: My computer COMMANDED me to install Windows XI

@Desertdi

How did you install it? Over your older version of Windows or a new/ fresh install?  Did you disable your antivirus software first? It can take a long time. It takes even longer when you sit there and watch it. What kind of cake did you buy?

Is your grandson telling you not to upgrade to windows 11 because it's a "downgrade" from Windows 10?  Not as good or stable is Windows 10? I didn't upgrade to Windows 11 for quite a while because I like to wait till the dust settles and patches/updates released. When I did finally upgrade I ran into zero problems.  Like with all Window upgrades I give it time for the kinks to be worked out.   Waiting on Windows 12.

Re: Windows 11-can anyone get me started in the right direction?

I don't know how old old is but you better find out if your old computer can run Windows 11 before you go out and buy it.

LibreOffice is a very good alternative to Word.  They also have an Excel alternative.  They are free

According to those in the know, "they" live in Missouri.  Sorry, I don't have an address.

Windows 11 has been out long enough to be more than stable.  It's been out since 2021. Just take precautions like disabling your antivirus software and if your computer doesn't automatically defrag your hard drive, it would be good to do that first as well.  If you have any old software that you're not using and don't plan to updated, remove those using the uninstall option in Windows. Just deleting the app in program files doesn't get rid of everything. Actually deleting a program the correct way also can leave files but unless you're familiar with hand cleaning the registry, don't.

1.  Fresh NEW install (done by Microsoft)...

2.  I didn't  do anything except wait for it to complete...

3.  I have been tinkering with it for the past 21 hours.   Yes, I have been up since YESTERDAY!

There were a LOT of "little things" I had to do manually...like re-pin ALL my icons...search for websites that "went missing"... (like my bank accounts...PANIC).

Also had to figure out the new layout...such as WHERE is my homepage...how do I even restart this thing, etc.

It was like my first day in school, WITHOUT A TEACHER...and I am exhausted.    More like brain-dead.

The cake is a three-layer carrot cake!    (One of those "smaller" ones that look like it was baked in a Crisco can.)

I am sure I will feel better tomorrow...but I still wonder "Was all this really necessary"????  di

Yes, it really is necessary. Pain in the butt, but necessary.  If I can remember everything, this is what I do before I update my OS. I take screenshots of all the layouts I feel I need, including the menu and the fly out menus. You can back up your bookmarks. I'll take screenshots of my C drive. Hopefully if you have other storage drives you didn't have to reformat those.  Put all of this on a thumb drive or a backup Drive. And I know, it is exhausting even if you know what you're doing. Don't try to put it all back together in one night. Go to bed and you'll be fresh in the morning.
