Your mayor was "hoodwinked, bamboozled, lead astray, run amok and flat out deceived!"
Less than two weeks into the new year, The Sixers delivered "a curveball that none of us saw coming," Mayor Cherelle Parker said at a press conference Monday.
Why it matters: The team's new deal with Comcast Spectacor to build a South Philadelphia arena and entertainment complex shakes up plans to redevelop Market East, the struggling business district where the Sixers had previously planned to put their new arena.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the Mayor's Office when she first found out. I bet she broke Samual L. Jackson F-Bomb record.

I saw that on the news last night! Personally I think all of the major sports teams should be in venues located in the sports complex in S Philly where they are for easy access and parking.
ETA: I can certainly understand why Chinatown is celebrating! They don't need that headache in their neighborhood!

Well, I think it would have been a big mess for center city had the sixers moved there. Traffic is bad enough without the addition of basketball games.
Many people in the northeast section would like to see Philadelphia Mills knocked down. That would have been a perfect place for a sports arena with plenty of parking and easy access to 95.
It makes sense, though, to keep the stadiums all together in South Philly.

Not sure what this topic has to do with QVC forums, but as a Philly resident I keep up with all our local news.
The mayor has stated that her ego does not come into play when the final outcome is for the overall good of the city.
Philly is still getting a new stadium, just in a different geographic area. There will still be a lot of new jobs for the unions with all the building.
Most of us who go downtown (Center City) felt that having a stadium there would be a pain for parking and crowd control anyway. The Chinatown community hopes there can be revitalization that will be more focused on their needs.
Yes, high level business negotiations do not always take politicians into account, but that is okay. We may end up with a new WNBA team as well.
I know many people personally on both sides of the issue, so actually the way it all worked out was a win-win for the city, although the process was frustrating.

@haddon9 I always thought it strange South Philly location was NEVER mentioned when it was first announced 2 yrs ago. A lot of businesses left Center City during the past 2 years in anticipation of the Market St/Chinatown location(s) Sixers sports complex.
On today's news, now the politicians are 😭 on how to rebuild Center City (Macy's is leaving). They can start by bringing back the Trailways/Greyhound station/terminals.

@Mz iMac Well if they put on their thinking caps I'm sure they can come up with something to bring business and revitalize the area!
I am sad about Macys (really the old Wanamakers' store) and I hope that the building can be saved including the holiday light show & organ!....wishful thinking on my part.

@Kachina624 Yes how could I forget the Eagle!
I believe that the building is considered a National historic landmark so I hope that it along with the eagle & organ are saved!

Phoenix just tears the "old stuff" down...and puts up a new subdivision...
I got stuck in traffic last week at a 4-way roadblock...had to find a way to get around it..and got lost in MY OWN NEIGHBORHOOD. Didn't recognize anything around me. di
