I think that if our media had shown more of those overburdened hospitals as many times as they showed personnel in hazmat suits, the public would have understood way better why the epidemics occurred where they did and would have been less fearful of such a thing happening here.

An article in today's Newsday has an ebola forecast for the US this winter - we could see as few as 20 cases and even as many as 120. Given that we've already handled all but one case extremely well and have learned lots from those errors, I'm less and less afraid of ebola going forward.

It's great to read this. And I agree with you.

Perhaps the media has been irresponsible in their reporting but I know that I will always be cynical when it comes to receiving medical information mostly as a result of some devastating and life-changing consequences of my medical care in the past. Not going to get into it, but my situation had such a simple solution and the various doctors I kept going to didn't know which end was up. I kept pleading with them and they kept pooh-poohing my symptoms.

So, our way of thinking is also very much a result of our experiences.

This has been my point for a few days now, ever since Kaci refuses self quarantine.

IF returning medical workers refuse to self quarantine, then if they should, heaven forbid become symptomatic, this will put a large burden on local health departments, health authorities whatever you want to call it(public health officials). Large amounts of resources will be needed to trace/track all the people the returning hero (and I mean that seriously,--these people are heroes) came into contact with.

This resource drain will have to come from where? The efforts at flu management, this new enterovirus management, vaccine programs. The money and the resources have to come from somewhere in order to do this tracing. It will require manpower.

So, I haven't heard yet why an at home quarantine is such a terrible thing. Yes, they are saying people don't want to go now but I don't get that so far.

Scottie, you bring up a good point. Someone has to do those daily visits. Public health departments aren't staffed to monitor a lot of people and do all those in-person visits every day.

Question, what about healthcare workers in the US who work with Ebola patients? Why should there be a double standard about quarantine when comparing them with their West African counterparts? What's the justification?

I just typed out a long response to Focksie and Gato, but for some reason it didn't come through. I didn't use any words not allowed. I hit submit and it was gone. No post, no error message. grrrr.

I'll type again later, but Focksie, I 100% agree with your post #51 and #56. Its because of the possibilities that i think we need to continue to be prudent and cautious. I am not running for the hills because of the possibilities, but I think science and research needs to continue and help advance understanding to rule out possibilities.

Havent watched the video yet, and now football has started, so hopefully tonight.

I don't think that there should be a double standard. If its good for one, its good for all. High risk is high risk no matter what location that high risk occurs.

And like someone posted on one of the other threads (can't remember who or what thread, been many lately) others are watching us and taking note. Our processes, or lack of, can become a point of national security.
