I asked her, "Do you know him?"

"Yes", she sighed,

"He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since."

"My Gosh!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?"

Ha, twopeas, I must be totally spaced today.  First, I was thrown off by the story-- I thought, "Oh, twopeas must be a guy, not a woman, telling a funny story about him and his wife".   I thought it was real, and the tag line was your witty joke.

You have to admit, it would be terribly cute if this anecdote really did happen between a jokester husband and wife!   Thanks for the laugh...
