our ladies group committee does a money tree at their annual luncheon.  The first year they "raffled" it by selling tickets - it was a $200 tree but no one knew the value.

 

For my good friends 50th anniversary another friend & I did a money tree. I used a nice silk small tree (like ficus style) filled in the bare spots with $100 worth of real bills from $1-$10.  It was a fun project and looked adorable.  We also used some filler picks found in Hobby Lobby during after Christmas (gold picks) and some with 50th from Birthday/party section.

 

I think a money tree should be real money. My niece was given a money tree at her wedding reception from her bridal party - it was on display inside a glass enclosed cabinet (I have no idea of the value).  In that instance,   I would definitely be concerned with some "bill picking" and using real money unless it was put away.

 

I guess it depends in what setting you would be gifting the "tree".
