Thanks for all the replies! I didn't expect it. I guess my sister was right after all. (Don't anyone tell her I said that!
) I just do things a little backwards it seems. I put bread on the counter then transfer to a plate and cut it in half. (I never cut on my counter) Or I'll wash p roduce, put on my counter, then transfer to the cutting board.
When I'm making 2 sandwiches at a time, it just seems easier to lay them all out flat on the counter to put on mayo or buttter and just go down the line, like an assembly line.
But to save my sister's sanity, when she comes over, I will use a plate from now on!

No counter top, and no paper towel... eeeuuuwwwww. Only a plate. A real plate, not paper.

@caroln242 - Always use a cutting board, paper towel, napkin, cutting or plate - We never put food directly on the counter.

I live alone and every night I clean down my counters and sweep and damp mop my kitchen floor. Twice on Sat. and Sundays since I am home for lunch those days most often, I never prepare food on my counter top. Even the thought of the bleach/cleaner having been on the counter is enough to make me not do it. I use a big plate, platter, paper towel or wax paper while working with food. Counters may have been cleaned but what if one spot was not rinsed well and that bite of food as a taste of cleaner on it. So to me it is not just being possibly dirty but even clean.

I always put food on something, never directly on my counter. I make my DH's lunch everyday and I put the buns on a plate to make his sandwiches.

I've done it a time or two but prefer something (Plate, paper plate, napkin or paper towel) down on the counter to use instead.

No you are not being gross!
I used to often put food directly on my counters, because I know how clean I am and I never had an issue with it. I would always clean the counter before I did it.
I stopped doing it for the most part, after my kitchen remodel because I want to protect my new counters (laminate) from being careless or in a hurry and just cutting on them, like I often did before.
I remember my grandma always laying down a paper towel to make a sandwich. I always thought it was because they lived in Florida by that time, and although she was among the cleanest homes I've ever been in, they had Palmetto (?) bugs no matter how much exterminating was done, and she was grossed out by it.
I clean my counters the same way I clean my sink and my cutting boards, and my dishes, so in my way of thinking, it's as clean as anything else I'm going to lay the food on.

I will add that in the day and age where everyone is all about going green, and eliminating waste, and curbing their use of paper products, that there are so many here saying they use paper towels for basic food prep.
Not condemning anyone. I am in no way giving up paper towels, even though I have reduced my use of them by about 70% over what I used to used back in my 20's and 30's.
I just find it odd that so many people are still using them in this fashion, and admitting to it! lol

Out of habit, I use either a paper plate, regular plate or paper towel.

In defense of those who use paper plates, paper towels:
It seems to me, in my situation, and maybe some others' situations, that it also takes a good deal of energy to wash and dry cotton towels. Also, it's a lot of work re: up and down stairs to my washer and dryer. The less washable towels I have to deal with is better for me.
But I do understand the idea of saving trees, energy.
I believe the loggers used to re-plant trees to replenish and thin out forests in order to prevent forest fires. Years ago.
But, of course, I could be wrong. Just thinking right now.
