I have been on Facebook for specific events and have quit several times, so I don't like it, either, when I am supposed to sign in to connect with a piece of news I would like to see.

Just don't  like the site's privacy issues,so I do go elsewhere for info I first learned of by seeing it was on FB.

@grandma2pkmh

Pinterest is different than QVC host pages (blogs).

No, QVC host pages are usually there to be friendly ... I guess.

FB somehow makes more money by extending social ties.

On FB, some posts that come through are from sources wanting to sell.

But you can get rid of those that are ad-based.

When that white bar pops up requesting that you join or sign on to view the page there is another option right under it:

Not at this time.

Click on that and you can still see the content of the page. I do it all the time.

I don't get it, either.  Why?  It makes it so annoying.

But I do love Instagram, I look forward to going through it every day, and there is no end to the subjects and people you can follow.  I don't follow celebs, but people like Neil deGrasse Tyson.

I really have to laugh when posters make statements like the OP - if you aren't interested in joining what are you doing on their site?

And those who say it gives TMI - that is 100% up to you what you put out there and what you read.

Do you feel like Facebook is trying to force everyone to sign up? I really don't want to join but it is becoming difficult to read public pages without that dumb white bar covering half the page. Also, I have noticed several talk shows occasionally have contest that you must enter thru Facebook.  I just don't like to feel "forced" to use Facebook to participate in things.

If you won't want to participate, you don't have to, but at this point, saying "I don't want to use Facebook" is akin to saying you don't want a telephone in your house back in the 1940s. You don't have to have one, but don't complain when you have to walk 10 blocks away to talk to your friend and then find out she can't have tea with you because she's on the phone with her sister.

Unlike indoor plumbing, phones, electricity, TV, the internet, smartphones, or any other new technology that changed the way people behave, Facebook doesn't cost money. That's pretty remarkable, really. But nothing is free and Facebook costs information. It doesn't check for fingerprints or ask for your papers, though, so you can give it fake information and open an account without giving up any of your personal information. Don't Friend people, don't post anything, just log in and read whatever you want. You can use Facebook without giving anything of value up.

Times change.
