Facebook Purity
Look at their page and see if this is an extension you want to use. I do, I don't get any ads , pop ups, and I can block words, pages, people I don't want to see.

Bingo!
Hi @Moonchilde
I just want to make sure I'm not missing something huge and important here...I googled (well, binged) my name and literally nothing came up for me (I have no cyber footprint and glad of it)...I binged my name, my real name. If I search for MacDuff, my posts here would come up (assuming). What am I missing, if anything?
@dooBdoo, any thoughts about this bizarre glitch?
Oooh, @MacDUFF, that was so weird! About 90 min ago, I could not respond to this post or in this thread (didn't try another thread) in Chrome, Firefox or Safari. My cursor wouldn't appear (physical keyboard OR virtual keyboard) and I literally could not type. Freaky. I almost couldn't now either but I persevered.
To respond to your comment - it is possible of course not to have an internet footprint in your real name if you rarely or never use it online. My real name turns up nothing. A writing nom de plume I used does show up, but since it's been since the late 1990s-early 2000s that I was active, the mentions are only a handful.
MalteseMomma and I were both speaking of a person's QVC identity being "out there" with posts - I see them all the time. Back when google had an active search engine for forums and discussion groups you could search for any username in just about any forum; they no longer have that function.
I also believe that both of us were indicating that if you *have* an online presence, i.e. If you've left any "real identity" footprints anywhere, it's not just FB where you would be visible but anywhere you'd exposed yourself as "you", information about you could be collated - not just FB - i.e. once again, FB is not the one and only big bad villain invading everyone's privacy.

@MacDUFF, my ipad cannot communicate with the QVC forums right now in any of three browsers. UGH!

@grandma2pkmh I think I understand what you're saying. Many websites have these plug ins and want you to connect with them via facebook. I had facebook seven years ago and dumped it. I detest it. That's just me, though.

If you won't want to participate, you don't have to, but at this point, saying "I don't want to use Facebook" is akin to saying you don't want a telephone in your house back in the 1940s. You don't have to have one, but don't complain when you have to walk 10 blocks away to talk to your friend and then find out she can't have tea with you because she's on the phone with her sister.
Unlike indoor plumbing, phones, electricity, TV, the internet, smartphones, or any other new technology that changed the way people behave, Facebook doesn't cost money. That's pretty remarkable, really. But nothing is free and Facebook costs information. It doesn't check for fingerprints or ask for your papers, though, so you can give it fake information and open an account without giving up any of your personal information. Don't Friend people, don't post anything, just log in and read whatever you want. You can use Facebook without giving anything of value up.
Times change.
@ChynnaBlue, I don't think I agree with this analogy at all. Many people nowadays have no land line and prefer the use of a cell phone for all things. Free's up extra $$ if you can use one for everything. No one has to walk ten blocks to talk their friend anymore. The next big thing many people are un-hitching themselves to is cable tv.

@itiswhatitis Maybe find another example that does work for you? I'm sure there are many who now use a cell phone everyday (and may have even gotten rid of their land line) who didn't feel any need for one in their early years of their existance. There will always be new technologies. Some will adopt them early on; others will not be interested in the new technology and yet feel they are missing out because they don't have it.
Anyway, I think @ChynnaBlue's example is one that many reading this thread can relate to.
I've been on Facebook for what seems llike "forever." It's what you make it. While I don't feel like there's any part of my life I need to hide, I'm also a fairly private person as far as volunteering information. I feel no obligation to post every move I make. In fact, I mostly share things I know my FB friends will enjoy. I've met some amazing people thru FB that I would never have met in real life. While I've never felt the need to unfriend, unfollow or block anyone, I certainly would do so if I felt the need to.
As far as businesses using FB, at this point it's too common a platform for a business of any size not to use it. To me a website is more important, but there's often a lot of activity on business related FB pages and it's an effective way for them to get out promotional info to the masses.

@juperier, umm no. She gave the analogy and I'm sure many people here understand change and progress. We are fast becoming a society of instant everything and I don't agree with the analogy she gave, but that's just me.
I'm not changing a thing but you can feel free to do that if my example does not suit you. Finally, I'm pleased that YOU enjoy facebook. I don't have to make it anything because I choose not to participate. I'm ok with that and I don't feel I'm missing out on a thing.

I get to see up to the minute pictures of the grandkids, as well as commentary, funny and informative. And look back pictures of them, too. My phone is full up with photos; there's no more room! Also, friends far and near are in contact, often with interesting, amusing and stimulating news items to show and convey! Also real time local news is available, which is helpful.

I must tell you you are missing out on a lot of good stuff!!! Friendships far and near, family updates ,far and near. current events ,far and near.
IMO FaceBook is the best thing that was ever invented to bring the world closer together. and Mark was Blessed by God to be given the idea to invent it!!!
FB only does what you want it to do.you do not have to show anything or talk to anyone or read anything you do not want to.You can keep entirely private or let the world know you are here.......lol
I absolutely love it and wonder what we ever did without it!!!
God Bless Mark Zuckerberg!!!!
Oh puleeessss!
There are a million other sources for current events. Other ways to stay in touch with family and friends.
And I do get what the OP means about being 'forced' (and so did you but you preferred to grandstand).
There are more and more things that you cannot participate in unless you have a FB to register, or to vote, etc. I simply think, oh well, I don't need to participate that bad.
I'm not missing out on a thing. I don't need to be hearing about my friends and family's every move all day long. I don't need to get their political views or their sports leanings or a million pictures of their grandkids clogging my everyday life.
And privacy on FB is a joke. It is only as private as those you share things with allow or keep. You choose who you share with, but they can easily share those things with others without your knowledge.
And FB itself is just too snoopy to suit me. Nope, I'm not missing a thing.
I thought I saw you post a FB link to a pretty lantern.
