Not at all.    I just don't participate if that is a prerequisite.   

I had a Facebook account, but it just wasn't for me so I deleted it several years ago. No biggie.  I get that others enjoy it, but I really didn't.    I don't want to know what anybody else is doing every minute of the day any more than anybody else wants to know what I'm doing every minute.  

When you sign up for Facebook to participate in stuff, that is just a company's way of using you for marketing.   Next thing you know, you're hearing from all kinds of companies that now have your private info.

At least if you do join for stuff like this, probably would be a good idea to put as little personal info as possible.     I still wouldn't do it, but I can't say what others should do.

You don't have to give them YOUR info, just info. If you give them an email address you never use, you won't here from anyone.

You don't have to friend anyone. If you don't, you won't have to see posts about what anyone had for lunch.

You have to provide a name, but it doesn't have to be your name or a complete name. If you don't give them the name you used in high school, no one from school can look you up. Easy. One of my friends uses her first and middle name with no last name. Another uses a short version of her last name (Mack instead of Mac...) and no one can find her unless she wants to be found.

You don't have to use Facebook if you don't like it, but it helps to know the tricks to make it work for you.

I do not know much about Facebook.

Two of our friends, one family member who are in LE. , my DH and myself worked or work in corrections. One thing we all have in common is no Facebook. Reasons and horror stories too numerous to mention.

I do not think privacy on the Internet is totally possible.

And you don't get marketing emails if that's what is assumed. The only thing that happens is targeted ads on your FB page. If you click on something, your ads will be based on what you click on - the same as using google or going anywhere online, even QVC. But no emails or phone calls. Not really more intrusive than cruising from website to website. And if you're on a computer, there are apps that block all the ads.

@grandma2pkmh, I understand where you are coming from.  It is the same as when the Internet started taking off and news programs for example would tell you a little bit about a story then refer you to their web page for the full story and updates.  Now it is referral to Facebook.

No but I do have issues with Pinterest.  Every time I google something it seems like often what I want results to where I'm supposed to go to Pinterest.  I REFUSE to sign up for it so I go somewhere else.

I just want to make sure I'm not missing something huge and important here...I googled (well, binged) my name and literally nothing came up for me (I have no cyber footprint and glad of it)...I binged my name, my real name.  If I search for MacDuff, my posts here would come up (assuming).  What am I missing, if anything?

@MacDUFF. My brother keeps a very low profile. I dont see anything on the internet if I google his name. If I add his town and state I do. I get his property records. If he didn't own property, he wouldn't show up.

I think I understand what the OP is referring to. If I'm not logged in and I click a link to a page from a different site there is an annoying pop up which keeps asking me to sign up or log in to see. I didn't notice that they had a not at this time button. It definitely affects the functionality of the site and is pretty annoying because every click seems to result in this message.  

I dont think she was bashing other people for using Facebook. 

If it's what I'm thinking of OP, I agree that it makes it hard to navigate if you don't have an account.  If I remember correctly, Pinterest is like that as well.
