I should say certain populations have a pretty good life in Brazil. Brazil is a country of immigrants. Very much like the U.S. The poorest people live in terrible slums there. Most desperately poor are children. Many of whom run wild with no parents. They live very much like wild animals. Except it's the city. When they get older, they turn to crimes. Who knows. Maybe that guy (& sister) started out there like those kids. Other groups have found success there. They also started from nothing. Parts of Brazil is first world. Very much like the U.S. The others parts are still 3rd world.

This captive's homeland is rough. Poor youngsters, or those homeless, have to be very resourceful to survive. It's an upbringing most of us could never imagine.
Brazilian Military Police have been accused of murdering numerous Brazilian kids, in an effort to 'clean up the streets.'
The kids hang out in trash dumps and places where they can scavenge something to eat, or items they might use. Of course, given the opportunity, they will steal, or try anything to survive and find a moment of comfort. They become like feral humans. It's horrible and a disgrace.
The wounded often have little remorse for wounding others, as they're filled with internal rage, gaining power from the wounds of others. Coming from such an environment, feeling so vulnerable, I can see how joining a gang might look promising, just like for this murderer. Probably fleeting, but a chance to have more control over others, instead of being controlled.
I'm glad they have this killer in custody, but he's one of far too many, which is unlikely to change. His story only made the headlines because he escaped.

@BlueFinch @Marp The big thing in Brazil is Carnival. Mardi Gras is nothing to compared to Carnival. Many poor communities come together to compete against each other in making the best costumes. It's pretty big in Spanish speaking South America too. But no where near how it gets in Brazil. As for Spanish and Portuguese there is a difference. Many words in both languages sound the same. But they mean totally different things. Very similar to Hebrew and Arabic. People that have Portuguese as their primary language can pick up Spanish easily. But it's harder the other way around. Many Spanish speakers find Portuguese very hard to understand. In the U.S. people from Brazil, Portugal, and the Philippines are not considered Hispanic.

@Mindy D Has Brazil asked him to be extradited? Or can they try him in absentia? I wonder if the US would be obligated to send him back.
@ValuSkr @Sorry, but I don't know. If Brazil wants to save money, they might as well forget about a trial.
@Kachina624 @ValuSkr We do have a mutual extradition agreement with Brazil.
An arrest warrant had been issued locally in Brazil at the time he murdered his friend but was never sent to the national registry. He left Brazil freely since authorities were not looking for him.
He is scheduled sometime in October for a trial in Brazil but I doubt Brazil will ask for an extradition.
I think he's just our problem now and Brazil really doesn't consider him worth the time, effort, and expense.
Plus a life sentence in Brazil is not guaranteed.
Edit spelling.🫤
@Cakers3. Prisoners who have a propensity and talent for escape, tend to try it repeatedly. Jail guards call them "rabbits" because they love to run. This guy is obviously very good at it. Want to bet that we haven't heard the last of him?
@Kachina624 He definitely had the skills to crab walk up that wall.
I'm wondering if the inmate we see in the video was a lookout. He was so close just around the corner from where Cavalcante escaped.
I thought I read the tower guard on duty was fired but I could be wrong.

@Cakers3. Yes, I too, heard he was fired.

@songbird I'm guessing that you speak Brazilian Portuguese. If so, you know that Cavalcante is pronounced kah-val-kan-chee. Nobody has pronounced it that way. He's had plenty of time in the criminal justice system to say how he pronounces his name. Do you have any insight into this?
Also, I would give soccer the edge over Carnaval as to being the main thing, but it's real close and can depend upon the year.
