Quit preaching and answer the question.

I won't stop preaching! That'll be the day I help someone eradicate themselves by smoking.

Preaching doesn't make anybody quit. It's more likely to make folks dig in and resist. Quitting has to be a personal choice that comes from within.

ITA.  As a former smoker I can say that preaching never did a thing to inspire me to quit. It had the opposite effect. It's a decision only the smoker can make.

The more holier than thou the preacher, the less I wanted to quit. So, @ID2, if someone you care about is a smoker, just can the lectures and hope they come to that difficult decision on their own. Once they do, give all the loving support you are capable of.
