Re: Childen Left in Cars To Die

[ Edited ]

My Husband said he had read that the car was a Porsche which was a loaner car as their was in the repair shop. He further said he read that the 5 yr went back out and got in the car but was locked in due to automatic door locks . The Mother did not look to see what was going on with the boy for 3 hrs.

 Back in the day when I was growing , parents and kids were warned abt kids getting locked in freezers or refrigerators

The temperature was 102 degrees. The sheriff said it was a rental car and it didn't have safety locks. Perhaps the child wasn't familiar with it. They will do further investigation.

@chickenbutt   It does, and unfortunately becoming more prevalent.

I remember one year, a while back, when there were two of these stories here locally.   The circumstances were identical.  The one person was just a regular nobody and was prosecuted.  The other person was well known and well off, and was not prosecuted.   I always felt like that spoke volumes.

I like the idea of putting left shoe in back with kid as reminder.  I cannot judge when I don't know all facts. I do know that I can get distracted and forget things. Since we don't all have new cars, individuals need to make a system that works.

@Twins Mom

"A system that works"! To me that is called the brain.

Re: Childen Left in Cars To Die

I don't buy the excuse that the person forgot about a child. Maybe subconsciously they wanted something to happen or didn't think/believe there was any danger. Freud would be interested in figuring out why this happens.

My daughter was telling me the newer cars may come out with alarms to sense when a child is left in a vehicle, sad that we need a car to help us parent.  I think some of these are not accidents.

I've heard about those new precautions.  Sadly, it seems like a good idea.

As to sometimes it not being an accident - I have watched real crime for many years and recall one case where the guy went to work and left the child in the car, out in the parking lot.  He even went out to his car at least once, during the day, and didn't seem to know???

At any rate, he was prosecuted and I'll be darned if I recall the outcome but I think there was enough evidence to show that it was intentional and I think he was proven guilty and went to jail.

I vividly remember that episode. Especially since they had video showing the Dad going to the car at lunch time to put something in his car. Here is the outcome of his trial.

A Georgia father convicted of murder after leaving his toddler son in a hot car two summers ago was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday.

Jurors last month convicted Justin Ross Harris of malice murder and other charges in the June 18, 2014, death of his 22-month-old son, Cooper, who was left in a Hyundai Tucson for seven hours in sweltering heat. Jurors believed Harris left the little boy to die on purpose.

Harris, 35, was also convicted of eight counts of malice murder, felony murder, cruelty to children in the first and second degree, sexual exploitation of and dissemination of harmful material to minors.

@drizzellla  Thank You so much for that detailed info!  I thought, somewhere rattling around in my brain, that he DID get convicted but I  could not recall all the details.

IIRC, it seemed there was some sort of scenario where he was messing around with somebody other than his wife and to have his child with the wife disappear was a part of the future he wanted with her.

I just heard that this conviction was overturned.    This angers me a great deal.     I hope it is re-tried.    There was quite a bit of evidence that led to conviction.    Smiley Mad

I think it is unfathomable how one could forget their child in the car. Our society must be creating a group of morons. This is not a toy; this is a human being left to suffer a horrible death..They should go straight to jail and never see the light of day. I know they are going to be tried by a jury but that child left to die was not given an opportunity to live.

This breaks my heart to think of an innocent child being tortured. I read that they literally cook from the inside out. I have always thought the person should receive the same type of punishment. So very sad..

Animals are left in cars that are too hot.  People must be mentally deranged. This topic makes me so angry about needless suffering.

@elated

Totally agree---3 things that really make me ANGRY

😡🤬 are abuse of children and animals and the elderly---(and being left in a hot car is definitely ABUSE)

Re: Childen Left in Cars To Die

She was rushing to set up a birthday party for her daughter and assumed that her younger child could get out of the car- In the past, he had apparently been able to get out of his car seat independently. It's all SOOOOOOOOO tragic and sad!

Re: Childen Left in Cars To Die

It's tragic that parents are so distracted these days that they would leave their child in a hot car.  The car I'm driving now posts a message on the infotainment screen that says "Don't forget your cellphone " when you turn the car off. It should say, "Don't forget your KID!"

@Linda0215  This is not new. It has been happening for quite awhile.
