Been frugal since my first job when I was 8 years old. I pretty much have stuck with "buying what I need, not what I think I might want". That was over 70 years ago.

Re: Changing spending habits

For the most part I shop like a guy, too. In and out of the store, buy what I need. Done. It's easier now than ever with all this low end MIC shlock.

Years ago I would save for that great set of high end sheets, some Avanti decor towels or my Croscill eyelet comforter that was to die for. My BFF would go with me, we'd lunch and shop!

Now it's just junque.

I learned my spending habits from my parents, who were very frugal.   I grew up seeing that we always had enough, but rarely had extra.   We learned to be careful and take care of our stuff, never waste, and buy only what we need.

Even with a little more in our wallets now, we are still frugal.   We buy quality things and take care of them, and I don’t buy anything that doesn’t fill a need or have a purpose.   I don’t like to spend my money.

Re: Changing spending habits

The charge cards and  watching nothing but the shopping channels can be pretty addictive. I used to do that but thankfully realized I was spending too much of my hard earned money for things I thought I had to have and spending more just sending much of it back!

Re: Changing spending habits

My spending habits are changing too.

I definitely love to shop, but I am also a saver and investor.  I pay off credit cards each month. In the past year, I haven’t needed as many clothes or shoes since I am not working. I used to spend way too much money on all kinds of stuff but I had the money to do that. Still, I think about how much of that stuff did I really need. Now I am trying to save even more in case I don’t go back to work. I need to make my money last as long as possible.

Re: Changing spending habits

I go through times that I don't buy anything and then once in a while and then I buy quite a bit.  I needed new summer attire for work and last weekend was free shipping and I went a little crazy.  I probably saved over $20.00 in shipping alone.  All I need is a pair of pants and I will be done for clothes for work for the summer.  After looking at clothes in the stores, some of the prices at QVC were reasonable.  I just don't enjoy shopping malls anymore like when I was young and love the convenience.  I used the easy pays and once my QVC card is paid off in a few months, I won't purchase again until the fall.  I know that it is easier to spend when you can just click and buy, so I try not to watch when I am trying to save money.

@Snowpuppy

How right!

I used to love to buy nice things, quality made and beautiful, knowing I would have and use them for years.

But honestly, anything in textiles now, is just junk. I don't care how nice a department store you go to. Fashion or linens, quality is just plain gone.

Even brands or retailers that still have some quality to their products, aren't made with the quality materials that they were even 30 years ago, let alone 40 or 50.

As a young adult in the early 1980's I bought sheets and towels at JC Penney, and used them literally for decades. I still have and use some of the towels, and the sheets I ended up giving away, still in great condition, simply because they no longer fit when we got a super thick mattress. Those same things today are not worth the time to go and pick them out.

And don't get me started on clothing. Everything in the store, regardless of whether or not I think the style is sufficient (and rarely it is), looks like rags on hangers. Thin, sloppy looking, hideous.

Brands I used to find so well made, like Land's End, LL Bean, Osh Kosh for kids, etc. aren't nearly as well constructed or made with as fine materials as back in the day.

I find it frustrating, and have come to the point I don't even want to shop for textiles.

Re: Changing spending habits

I ordered a maxi skirt from QVC and when it came I did not like it so I returned it. Today I got an e mail that my refund of 12 cents had been credited. Naturally I calked customer service. They said it was on easy pay and only my first payment had been charged - $12 and change. All but 12 cents of that was taken for the S&H to be shipped & returned. OVER $12 !!!

@151949  That's right-even though your shipping is split with the cost of the item and tax (if you have tax) when you return the item you don't get a partial refund on that shipping-they bag us for the full shipping.  It actually makes sense if you think about it.

Shipping is shipping whether it's on easy pay or a one time payment, so the Q recoups the whole amount.

I very seldom buy from the Q for that reason.  Free shipping specials can draw me in but there is still that pesky return fee.

And as others have said-they bag multiple items in one box but charge shipping on each item.  What a racket.
