I use a technique with my kids. I have a kitchen timer and set it for 5 minutes, at the end of that period all moaning and whining, especially if is not about a life altering issue, must cease. Works like a charm, lol.

Sydney I LOVE that timer idea!

I swear it works. If they need more time than that, I joke that they need professional therapy.

Sydney ... I may just borrow that idea for the whiners I have at work. My BS button/siren means nothing to them anymore. Maybe the timer will work! WOO HOO ... timer run!!!!!

Great article and it is about chronic and negative complaining, not the occasional needed kind.
When I was diagnosed with MS I determined I would not be negative or complain about this situation. Instead, I turned to a higher power. I read good books by positive authors. I listened to people like Joel Osteen, Joseph Prince, Joyce Meyer and others, who gave me the foundation to build a positive outlook on life, no matter what happens. On my worst days, I would say "no, I'm not going to think that or say it", and I would immediately turn to positive words and thoughts and at times I've had to force myself to do that. For me, it works and I'm much happier when I do it.

This is a nice thread, @newziesuzie. Great responses, too!
I've always like that particular Gandhi quote.
To me, it's been extremely helpful to learn to keep a gratitude journal. The discipline of writing, every day, at least one thing for which I'm grateful (without repeating the same thing again and again) turned out to be more of an exercise than I expected. It was a real eye-opener.
Here's another quote I like:
"Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life."
(Rumi, poet)

If it weren't for "complaining" we'd still be burdened with the 2010 forum software and we wouldn't have games in their own forum and all the new sub forums.
Agitating for change is heroic; accepting things as they are or turning a blind eye to the opportunity to make things better is not.
