The most recent fallout here is that fireworks tents are going up, but they can't get fireworks to sell. Millions of containers of fireworks are sitting in ports in both China and the USA and can't get delivered due to transporation problems caused by the pandemic.
@decaf -- I agree that it's the 'entitlement' generation. They want money and things, but they don't want to work to earn them. They think it's beneath them to work in the service industry for minimum wage, so they don't work at all.

@decaf - you won't get any flack from me. I know a lot of people who still pay for their (well into adulthood) kid's cell phone bills. car insurance, etc. so that they can "save money". Parents have given their children a lifestyle that took them 30+ years of hard work to attain and their children want to start there and just go up without any sacrifices. Having a job that isn't fun and won't let you take off whenever you want? Perish the thought! And I do see the entitlement attiitude as well.

Businesses that pay decent wages aren't having any problems finding good employees. I've read and watched countless reports they have a lot of people applying for their jobs.
Most people want to work. They also want to be paid a decent wage and treated like they matter. I worked for a huge corporation for decades and could tell you stories of abusive managers that would curl your hair.
I have listened to other managers isay they offer as little pay as possible because they can and it saves money in their budgets which makes them look good. Then they wonder why they can't keep good employees.
We have too many people who refuse to get the vaccine. I wouldn't want to work with them either.
Many people learned how to live on a lot less money the last year. It's possible some learned to prefer that and family over the often excessive pressures and overtime imposed at work.

I suppose a few are afraid to go back, maybe.
I didn't read it, but saw an article on Wolfgang Puck saying he cannot get enough help for his restaurants. A local pizza chain has said this also.

My area is having that same problem, restaurants and fast food places remain closed due to a lack of workers, the signs on their doors state.
Why work when they can sit home and receive the same amount of 'pay'?
Could you live on $300 per week? That's all they get and it certainly doen't pay the mortgage or rent.
Don't judge. There are many reasons and I noted a couple in my other post.

All the talk about entitlement and this generation just want it handed to them and not wanting to work too hard etc. No one I know from that generation is like that at all.
Not my children or their many friends.
They are as hard working and more than many from my own generation and they have fewer breaks and much larger expenses in rent, medical etc.
All this judging and widespread generalizations makes me wonder if people even know many individuals/ family or even one or a few who are like this, more than the opposite of those who are trying their best.
It serves no purpose to do this and make these sweeping judgements,
over and over without considering any others real circumstances or what they are going through.

$300 a week is the Federal benefit, add that to the state benefit.
In NJ the maximum benefit is around $650, I understand that most people aren't going to be eligible for that amount but if you could sit home and collect $950 a week would you go to work?
A lot of them may be breaking even when you take into account, no car fare, no commuting, no dry cleaner bills, coffee or lunch costs.

@chessylady wrote:There is a simple answer for getting employees. Pay them a higher wage. Yes, we might have to pay a little more for our burgers. Isn't competition supposed to be part of a capitalist system? It is about time the workers get paid more. After all, we call them essential persons.
I agree, and a lot of women had to leave jobs to stay home with their kids. If they received more on enemployment so be it. Day care is very expensive. I agree about the higher wages.
It seems that when ceo's of big companies receive big pay checks its fine, when the little guy makes a little extra money its big news. Receiving extra money on unemployment is not making anybody rich but it is allowing people to pay monthly bills.

I feel we will turn around. We went through quite a hard period. We just need to hold hands.

@on the bay I didn't make any sweeping judgement, I mentioned three people I know. Since you "know no one from that generation that is like that at all", I'd venture to say you are perhaps making sweeping judgements in your opinion here.
