Re: And we have another cruise issue

It's one thing for healthy people to make a decision to travel, but for a wife to make her husband travel when he is older and unhealthy; well frankly, I wonder if she wants to become a widow.

Re: And we have another cruise issue

My brother has a cruise set next month. He says he's going. I told him that's stupid but good luck when you get stuck on the ship. He's almost 67 but pretty healthy. His wife went through cancer so her immune system is not what ones should be. You could not pay me to get on a floating petri dish.

@Hoovermom  I'm just curious and if you don't mind me asking are over the age of 60? Only reason I ask is because I just saw on the news from the CDC stating that anyone over the age of 60 should NOT go to any large gatherings or be in confined spaces (cruises, airplanes for an extended period, etc)

They were stating that it was NOT advised unless it was absolutely necessary. I'm sorry, but a CRUISE isn't absolutely necessary imo. I've never been on one, but I have no desire to either even if I could afford it. Anyways, please make the right decision for you and your DH. I'm sorry, but I would NOT listen to my dr in this situation. Period. He might not be aware of the current advisory.

@BrandiDavis :  Thank you for your concern.  My doctor is very prominent in his field and mentioned all of the precautions.  I am listening to him because he saved my life years ago.  We talked about it today and how far I have come.  He knows Dr. Fauci and we discussed his recommendations.  Again, I am trusting my doctor.  I believe you left off part of the CDC's suggestion was for people over 60 WHO HAD CHRONIC health issues should ....................................

Re: And we have another cruise issue

Think of all the people on high blood pressure medications and people who have diabetes. Those are known major risk factors for COVID-19

Sure it's great that we all feel healthy, due to the wonders of modern medicine. But if you are taking a med for a condition, you are included in the group with that condition. My DH is "healthy" but he is on blood pressure meds. Almost everyone in our friend group is on that.

If you have to think about what meds you'll be taking on your cruise, you might be in a group who shouldn't be going on one for the time being.

Here you go from Politico:

A top U.S. health official on Sunday warned Americans who are elderly or have who underlying health conditions not to get on a cruise ship as the number of documented coronavirus cases continues to rise within the United States and globally.

“Something that’s important, that I hope the American people appreciate is that the risk of getting into trouble with this infection, namely if you are infected, is overwhelmingly weighted toward people with underlying conditions and the elderly,” said Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“If you're a person with an underlying condition and you are particularly an elderly person with an underlying condition, you need to think twice about getting on a plane, on a long trip,” he said. “And not only think twice, just don't get on a cruise ship.”

Re: And we have another cruise issue

@Hoovermom

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/covid-19-cruise-ship

CDC typically posts travel health notices for countries and other international destinations, not conveyances, such as ships, airplanes, or trains. Because of the unusual nature of the novel coronavirus outbreak, the US government is advising US travelers, particularly those with underlying health issues, to defer cruise ship travel.

Recent reports of COVID-19 on cruise ships highlight the risk of infection to cruise ship passengers and crew. Like many other viruses, COVID-19 appears to spread more easily between people in close quarters aboard ships.

Person-to-person spread of COVID-19 is occurring and countries are reporting both travel-related cases and community spread of the disease. As the outbreak of COVID-19 continues, there remains a risk of infected travelers and crew boarding cruise ships.

It has become clear that people with underlying conditions such as heart disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, and other conditions that cause suppression of immune system particularly among the older adults, are at a high risk of serious disease if infected with the novel coronavirus.

To best protect these vulnerable individuals, we recommend that such individuals avoid situations that increase their risk of acquiring infections. This entails avoiding crowded places, avoiding non-essential travel such as long plane trips, and especially avoiding embarking on cruise ships.

In addition, The U.S. Department of State recommends against cruise ship travel. This is a dynamic situation and those traveling by ship may be impacted by travel restrictions affecting their itineraries or ability to disembark or may be subject to quarantine procedures implemented by the local authorities. While the U.S. government has successfully evacuated hundreds of our citizens in the previous weeks, repatriation flights should not be relied upon as an option for US citizens under the potential risk of quarantine by local authorities. U.S. citizens should evaluate the risks associated with choosing to remain in an area that may be subject to quarantine and take the appropriate proactive measures. Passengers who plan to travel by cruise ship should contact their cruise line companies directly for further information on the current rules and restrictions and continue to monitor the travel.state.gov website for updated information.

Re: And we have another cruise issue

A lady I know who is a Travelmation agent (one of thos Disney agents) just posted that it's a great time to take a cruise because prices are low. Gee ... ya think? I can't believe how irresponsible and idiotic people are. I wanted to comment "thanks but no thanks" or "you first!"

And Dr. Fauci said that if you are young and healthy, and want to take a cruise, take a cruise.

He advised that those who are 65+ and/or have underlying health issues, to not take a cruise.

So, for those that are young and healthy, and want to snap up a bargain, and want to cruise, should go!

Re: And we have another cruise issue

@Hoovermom are you ok with being quarantined if someone tests positive on the ship?  That would prevent me from going.  It would be awful stuck in a cabin that long.
