I do only use non sulfate shampoos, but I don't know if they are really any better than shampoos with sulfates.

I do only use high-quality shampoo--no drugstore.  I wonder if drugstore ones are as good and are as gentle.

@winamac1, I tried my husband's Clean Hair by Pantene the other day and my hair looked the best it has in months. I usually use sulfate free shampoo and I don't think it cleans my scalp all that well. The Pantene products seem to work. I think I will be interchanging Pantene with my usual high quality shampoos..

@Trinity11Thanks Trinity.  I have heard great things about Pantene.  I know many love  Pantene.  Do they have a lot of silicones in them though?  I'm concerned about silicones.

@winamac1, shampoos don't normally contain silicones. Cones are usually found in conditioners. BTW, there are some cones that don't end in -cone. With my curly hair, I avoid silicones in any hair products that I use.

But Pantene shampoo does contain sodium laureth sulfate -- thought to be not as harsh as sodium lauryl sulfate. Personally, I avoid all sulfates in shampoos and any skin or body products.

@winamac1, I should have said that silicones are found in conditioners AND styling products as well. They are hard to avoid, but many high-quality curly hair products do not contain cones.

I've always washed my hair every morning until about 2 years ago.  With my current shoulder length bob and with all the dry shampoo on the market, I'm able to wash it every 3rd day.  I've been a Wen user for the past 7 years and will be for life.

@Group 5 minus 1  I thought I was the only one who noticed that smell.  My hair is shoulder length and I shampoo it every morning...always have.

@Trudey@hollyshine - Gosh,  I hope all the dry shampoo I use on my non-washing days prevents that dirty scalp smell!

@Trudey, if it's any reassurance, I have never encountered the smell of a dirty scalp. :-)

I try not to wash my hair every day and my first wash after I color my roots is a co-wash. My hair doesn't hold on to color at the roots very well and shampoo seems to make it come out faster too. I have porous hair.

Silicones are in some shampoos.  I just looked at 2 bottles of shampoo that hubby has upstairs in his shower.  BOTH have dimethicone in them--not at top--but halfway down.

@suzyQ3

One of mine has silicones in it too.  It's a high-end brand.

I try to skip a day when I know I am not going out anywhere to help preserve my color.  I usually feel crudsy all day knowing I did not wash my hair.  I have an oily scalp and short hair.

How can I tell if a shampoo contains silicone?

Unfortunately, this is not obvious, unless you’re a chemist. Silicone is listed under a wide array of names. Unless the product specifically states that it’s silicone-free, most likely it contains some form of silicone.

Two in one shampoo and repair shampoos always contain silicones, as do most ‘normal’ shampoos. Instead of the word “silicone”, you may find one of these substances listed in the ingredients:

  • Dimethicone
  • Dimethiconol
  • PEG-12 Dimethicone
  • Hydroxypropyl

If you want to avoid silicones in your hair products, only purchase products that clearly state that they contain no silica.

I have found that the couple of SF shampoos that I tried don't get my hair as clean as those with sulfates,  and that hair color doesn't "go down the drain"

IMO there is a lot of info out there that SLS is bad for you and people just want to eat this kind of stuff up as always we choose the products we want to use
