Primers put a barrier between your moisturizer and your makeup. Without it, as your moisturizer is absorbed into you skin, it takes your makeup with it. I notice it the most with blush. Without primer my blush is gone within hours. With primer it lasts until I remove it.

Interesting. I guess I've never actually had it explained quite this succinctly. Makes sense. But where does it fall in order with sunscreen? Moisturizer, sunscreen, primer?

Question to all: Does everyone who uses primer also use sunscreen? Does anyone feel that a sunscreen containing silicone can act as a decent primer?

I used to use Smashbox primer with SPF 15 in it. Now I use LG Balance and Brighten with SPF 15. They both work fine for everyday exposure. There are lots of options for getting sun protection into your routine one way or another. I also sometimes used to use a light bronzing spray with SPF 30 (I think) in it. A primer or bronzer or foundation with SPF in it is a smart way to go IMO, with a heavier sunscreen for the beach or working outside for a long time etc.

I'd think a sunscreen and a primer would be formulated differently, but am not exactly an expert on the topic. If you do find a strong sunscreen that works well as a primer, I'd love to know about it!

Oh and eyeshadow primer is an absolute MUST. Almost no point in wearing powder eyeshadow without primer under it. Smooth color...no creasing...A must.

Which eye primer do you use? Thanks.

I wear a Mally eyeshadow that has her shadow primer right next to it in the compact. Many of her shadow compacts and pallets include it. It's great and wears well and really convenient. When it's right there you remember to use it. Just pat it on quick with a finger.

I've also used Urban Decay and Benefit's shadow primers and had great luck with them. Heard good things about Too Faced's Shadow Insurance, but I'm happy with Mally so I haven't tried it.

Porcelain, does eyeshadow primer help prevent shadow fall-out? I use very high-end shadows, a good shadow brush, and I still have some shadow fall under my eyes. I don't know how to keep the shadow on my lids!

I think it might. It sort of grabs onto the shadow. I don't have issues with shadow fallout, so it may be that the primer is helping with that. Do you tap the brush before you apply? Doing that helps knock off some of the loose excess shadow that might otherwise fall. I only know to do that because I've watched several of Mally's application videos on YouTube.

I have Mally's large neutral pallette with the primer, but the primer irritates my eyes so bad! The shadows work ok though....I've been using the Too Faced Shadow Insurance and its awesome, doesn't turn a wierd too light color and is not too drying! Keeps my eye makeup on all day and you only need a tiny dab. Face primers I haven't seen any difference though, have a high end one and rarely use it, I'd like to try that Skinn Orchid Gel....

I also heard that SPF in makeup really doesn't help guard against the sun at all, it has to be slathered on! Bummer.

Re: Primers - Do these really make a difference?

OP, I use BE clear primer , in the small pump bottle . I think it's about 1 ounce. I began using it when I wore BE makeup & it created a smooth, even skin surface for the foundation powder. I couldn't wear BE powder foundation without the primer . I even use it when I have to , under other makeup brands . It dries pretty quickly too . BTW , less is more . Only use a little bit & apply by dotting it around your face ....smooth it out from there. You'll know its dry , when its no longer " tacky " . It should be dry & smooth .....then you can add your makeup . If you make the mistake using large amounts of primer , that thick layer won't dry properly . It will make a mess when you add your makeup over it . " less is more " . Good luck !

Oh, I never thought about the primer perhaps already having a sunscreen. I usually use mineral powder foundation which offers some protection but I don't consider it really counting. Same as the liquid I occasionally wear. I always wear an actual dedicated sunscreen of at least 30SPF. I use either Neutrogena Dry Touch or SkinMedical Environmental Defense. The thought of layering on another another product, primer, confuses me.

Re: Primers - Do these really make a difference?

when I use a primer its only to diffuse the look of pores since I don't wear foundation. since purchasing the isomers BB cream, which is loaded with skin care, I use that and finish off with RCMA no color powder. I do however wear lid primer and it keeps everything in place nicely

Re: Primers - Do these really make a difference?

I honestly have tried so many and don't ever see any difference. I've never had any issues with my foundation fading and I don't have large pores so maybe primers are best for those types of issues? I love eyeshadow primers though but facial primers, completely worthless to me.

And speaking of eyeshadow primer, I am so impressed with Avon's. What a little gem in a jar!

That's definitely a generalization. It is not "an absolute must" for me.

I never use eyeshadow primer, and have had no problems. My shadow stays on all day and looks great.

One of the few things I never have to worry about!
