Re: Primers - Do these really make a difference?

I use LG primer and I wouldn't be without it! My makeup lasts all day, even the blush, without a touch up. However, I'm always trying new things out of curiosity, especially if they can make my life easier. I just ordered the YBF BB cream that's supposed to have a built-in moisturizer, primer and color-correcting makeup in one. I'll see how that works, I'm kind of hooked on Bare Minerals because it's light on the face. The BB is a cream, still not a liquid, so if I can save some steps in the am, that would be awesome!

Primers put a barrier between your moisturizer and your makeup. Without it, as your moisturizer is absorbed into you skin, it takes your makeup with it. I notice it the most with blush. Without primer my blush is gone within hours. With primer it lasts until I remove it.

Interesting. I guess I've never actually had it explained quite this succinctly. Makes sense. But where does it fall in order with sunscreen? Moisturizer, sunscreen, primer?

Question to all: Does everyone who uses primer also use sunscreen? Does anyone feel that a sunscreen containing silicone can act as a decent primer?

I know you've already received answers on this, but here's what I do. I don't use moisturizer. My skin is combination and my dermatologist said I really don't need to. I DO use a moisturizing sunscreen - every single day, rain or shine. Whatever my foundation is, and whether or not it has SPF in it, the first thing on my face is my sunscreen. I let it dry a few minutes. The next is primer. Even if I'm not wearing makeup I always finish with Mally's Face Defender. Those are the three products I wear every day without fail. Smile

I also heard that SPF in makeup really doesn't help guard against the sun at all, it has to be slathered on! Bummer.

yes you should never rely on spf in foundation solely for sun protection as you never use enough to give the best coverage/protection.

I don't wear sunscreen on my face. I wear BE. I sat at a 14 inning Yankee game in direct sun. I wore and reapplied every other inning SPF 50 on my body and tanned. I forgot the top of my head and burned my scalp badly. But my face, nose and cheeks under my BE (that I did not reapply at all) was my usual pasty white when I washed it off that night. Didnt even tan.

I use Two Faced and Mally. Several years I had never heard of BB creams, CC creams or primers , now they are everywhere !

Re: Primers - Do these really make a difference?

For foundation application, I have found that a primer makes a difference. The makeup goes on more evenly. At times my skin is all over the place - drier patches here and there (some caused by way too much sun exposure from my teens and 20s), pores more prominent in other areas (sun again!) etc. Then there are a few scar tissue spots that have left a drier texture. I find that a good primer does provide a much smoother and even canvass for foundation. It can also act as a barrier of sorts from the makeup penetrating the pores - easier to get those pores clean at the end of the day.

I only use a primer when I'm using the PUR mineral makeup compact & I use a small sample of their primer that I got as a GWP. I have oily skin so the primer makes a HUGE difference for me in how well the powder stays on through the day.

Thanks for your answer too. Is the Face Defender a finishing powder?

My all time favorite primer is the Orchid Gel by Skinn. My Laura Geller B&B last all day long on me now that I have been using the Skinn product. It minimizes pores too!

Re: Primers - Do these really make a difference?

Wow! Thanks for all of the replies! I haven't been back on here as I have been dealing with parent / nursing home issue.

It seems as though the majority feel primer does make a difference. I did at one time but it seems lately that it hasn't been working as well for me. Maybe I need to switch it up.

I have been wanting to try Mally but afraid of breakout. I have very sensitive rosacea skin and have been using Smashbox for a long time. I tried Laura Geller and it just seems too sticky for me.

I thought also I may not be using ""enough""?
