Wow! Thanks for all of the replies! I haven't been back on here as I have been dealing with parent / nursing home issue.

It seems as though the majority feel primer does make a difference. I did at one time but it seems lately that it hasn't been working as well for me. Maybe I need to switch it up.

I have been wanting to try Mally but afraid of breakout. I have very sensitive rosacea skin and have been using Smashbox for a long time. I tried Laura Geller and it just seems too sticky for me.

I thought also I may not be using "enough"?

I'm clearly in the minority. I've tried many primers (high-end, drugstore, everything), and I've never seen any difference.

I know what you mean about not being sure you used enough. I thought the same thing. Am I using enough? Too much? But I did lots of experimenting, and finally realized that spending money on primer made no sense for me.

I'm certainly not arguing with the posters here who get great results. Just trying to answer your original question and present a different point of view!

It depends on the primer. I think some primers make a big difference in how smoothly my makeup goes on, how long it takes for oil to show through, and how long my makeup lasts, in general. I wasn't impressed with Laura Geller's Spackle primer. I have a Burberry Primer that has a gorgeous radiance, but I don't like it as a primer. Instead, I mix a drop into my foundation.

My favorite primers are Revlon PhotoReady, Bare Minerals Prime Time, Mally, It Cosmetics No #50 Serum, and L'Oreal Magic Perfecting Base. Those are all heavier on the silicones, which work better for me in terms of preventing oil breakthrough.

Chynna, is the L'Oreal Magic Perfecting Base anything like Mally's? I just ordered another jar of Mally's, but I've always wondered about the L'Oreal.

Sun screen in make up does work, last summer I was in the sun too long and I was burned every where except my face. I don't use primer with liquid make up, it doesn't seem to make a difference.

These are my feelings/experience about/with primers to a "T"!

I've found two or three that have worked for me. One from 100%Pure and I've had moderate success with Bare Minerals yellow primer. It evens out redness.

I have to agree about primers and I hate silicones. Are there any really good primers without silicones?

100% pure , Lorac Aquarprime, Fresh rose facial primer, Korres mattifying primer, Hourglass veil mineral primer, Tarte brightening primer are just a few. I am sure there are alot more.
