Re: Typing, what about writing?

@embgmwrote:

Personally I am annoyed to receive printed cards and notes from friends my age, who I know learned to write in cursive more than 60 years ago.

personally, I'm just glad to hear from friends whether it's cursive, hand-printed, typed--whatever. We're all getting older so the "problem" with printing, typing, etc., doesn't bother me at all.I'm just glad to hear from them in whatever form they choose...even if it's a text.

There are more important things in life to be annoyed about.

Re: Typing, what about writing?

In the early 80's I was shopping at the now defunct Gemco. It was a Dept/Grocery store. Everyone filled up their huge carts and then headed for the door to pay. Suddenly all the lights went off and eventually we were all told to leave the store!! "What about my shopping cart??" We were told to just leave them. Holy Moly.... leave what could amount to many thousands of dollars and walk out?? I asked if they had any kind of back up system in place (and I didn't mean a pen and pad of paper). Nope. Nothing, computers were it.

I think whomever is able to design a non-computer back up system to "catch" these break downs and stop companies from losing all that money would make out. Sadly, no one has done this (that I know of).....yet....

@Q4uUnfortunately that's more about inventory and credit card processing. You can't take payments without electricity to get the cards authorized and sent to the bank for payment on both the store and customer end and few people carry significant amounts of cash anymore. No more carbon slips for those credit cards to be input later.

.

All of the accounting and inventory is now done by computer as well and the computer usually kicks the ordering system automatically once the store sells a certain amount and hits a certain minimum for each item so the shelves never go bare. No human orders anything in most retail instances unless you're a very small business.

.

If they emptied the store even for the cash customers, the revenue would never hit the bank, the government wouldn't get their sales tax, and the inventory system wouldn't know the store was low on toilet paper and other items and needed a delivery. Oh and the employees probably can't clock in and out since that's all by software now too so you have no payroll capability or labor law compliance.

.

I don't think there is anyway to return to simpler times. The computers literally run the world and us. 😕
