@ECBG You might want to rethink using a debit card at the pump....your card could be easily compromised.

We use credit at the gas pump and haven't had a problem.
Why doesn't New Jersey let people pump gas? It seems that it would save money by not having to hire extra to do the job. Maybe they don't trust many to use the pump properly, thinking it might cause accidents? Just kidding, but I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

Many pumps have been like that near me for awhile.
What I have encountered is that although some may hold my card while I enter my PIN, its not keeping the card long enough to do all of the authorizations my bank requires. I have to use the Tap to pay option instead.

Yea, we used to collect the S&H green stamps to fill our books up for free stuff.

The gas station I use in town changed their card readers within the past 6 months or so. In the past, you inserted the card and removed it quickly but now you have to leave it in a fairly long time before it tells you to remove it. Even after doing so, it will still say "authorizing" before you get the message to choose your gas preference and begin pumping.

@ECBG wrote:I just thought I would let you know. While paying at a different gas station yesterday, it wanted to have my card still inserted while I punched in my pin number. When I pushed it in and pulled it out as I alread did, the screen read "denied". I knew that was not the case.
I was SO accustomed to quickly inserting my debit card and pulling it out, before my pin number, it concerned me!
DH says it's "new machines"! Grrr.........
Get ready for changes Ladies!
Where I live, your credit card or debit card isn't quickly inserted in and out. It has been this way for a while now. You have to put your card in and wait a couple of seconds until it says you can remove your card. Much like what they did at stores.

I found myself having to read the instructions on the screen, some say insert ONLY and some still say insert & withdraw quickly.
I'm not the sharpest tool in the drawer but it would be nice if all card readers could be standardized in some way. I used a self check at Walmart, when I was finished scanning I put my card in for payment. At another store I have to hit "Pay Now" or it won't take my card.
Some still need you to swipe, not insert.
I know cashiers think I'm a moron, I always hesitate, "what do I do" like I just landed from Mars.
I've started using cash more.

Don't feel bad--you are definitely not alone!
Just a couple of days ago I had to enter my phone number when picking up my RX. For the life of me I couldn't remember the last two digits! (I recently dropped the landline I've used for years and I still have a hard time remembering my cell number.) The pharmacist was very patient and understanding while I looked it up on my phone. But how embarrassing.
And then to top it off I did almost the same thing at the checkout. I had to put in my phone number to get the sale price and forgot the area code so it didn't work. Then I didn't realize I had to press the 'Enter' key when finished. (You can tell I don't shop at that store often!😂) The poor cashier was probably delighted to see me finally leave the store!🤗
It's times like those that make me try to be especially patient when other people are struggling. You never know when it can happen to you.
