I don't know about other places but, where I am, you can cash a check someone has given you at the bank it's drawn on.  You would likely have to produce identification.

And, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it still a crime to pass a bad check?  I wouldn't for a minute think this neighbor wouldn't know whether she had funds to cover it or not.

However, we won't know the outcome of this long discussion until @Alsace Gal comes back to tell us.

How did the visit to the bank go, @Alsace Gal ?  Enquiring minds want to know!

ETA:  Just saw your update on the new thread, but many here would like to know, I'm sure.  And we still want to know if the check turns out to be good!  Woman Wink

I haven't read all the comments, but stop this right now.  It's dishonest.  She's taking advantage and you are being complicit in the deceit. I probably wouldn't feel as strongly if it were immediate family but not in this case. I'm sorry to be harsh about this, but it's not fair to do this when honest people are paying membership fees every year.

The check was good at the time of depositing it, early this morning.
Early this morning I went to neighbor's bank and asked if there was funds to cover it. Teller looked up account and said yes.

However since I didn't have an acct. there they wanted to charge me seven dollars to cash it. I declined. I went to my credit union and deposited the check.

I hope it all works out and you can recoup the other money she owes you.
