OP has stated prior parents are in their 80's.  Would move heaven and earth for mine, much less allow/expect them to be responsible for feeding others no matter the occasion.  As you stated, can't imagine conveying what comes across to a bunch of strangers on the internet.

I was an RN and missed many holiday dinners due to working. All part of a health care career
