I did go to see the pharmacist that helps me with me cholesterol meds about some issues with other new meds I was given. He explained what my  rx meds are for and what they do for my issues, if they played well together and any side effects---- I also   brought the a bag of supplements for advice too.  He again told me that none of what I was taking would do me any harm or interfer with my meds and actually said a couple of them were good to take ---one was fish oil and the other was vit D3. He said that if the others made me feel better than no problem. But you know that supplements usually take months  to do much----not sure I will continue with those---am tired of swallowing so many pills everyday---but one of the new meds--a statin--was giving me grief so he suggested I stop it. I have problems with side effects of statins anyway. So I walked away relieved and with a new plan and will see him for blood work in June. He will send all info  to my heart dr and I will see her in June too. One appt down--about 4 others to go---sheesh!!!

Your pharmacist is a doctor? I'm confused.

HOLY SMOKES!! Your pharm told you to stop a medication from your Doc? That's unethical and if your Doc finds out about his advice could get hime fired! And rightfully so!

Good for you for taking advantage of that program! Your pharmacist will know more about your meds than any medical doctor ever could.

And to correct some assumptions, pharmacists are doctors of pharmacology and they do everything in concert with the attending physician.

And the only person who can tell you to stop a medical regimen is you. Doctors, medical and pharmacy, can counsel, but your healthcare is ultimately up to you and your willingness to comply or not.

I have decided not to take offered statins many times for a lot of these same reasons. That's the decision that is right for me too. There are many other approaches to take. I wish you well on finding yours.

@wagirl

Statins ... OMG.  After a few attempts at statins, my PCP switched me to fenofibrate.  Six weeks later I was a mess.  I couldn't even walk from the muscle weakness and pain.

I am convinced my body rebels at any attempt to lower the chlorestrol level via medication.

At this point, we are trying higher dosages of fish oil.  Maybe we can trick my body into lowering chlorestrol without side effects.    At least until I can get strong enough to do some exercise.

Good luck with your new plan.  It's a constant struggle.

Re: appt with my Pharm dr.

[ Edited ]

Am appointment with a pharmacolgy doc seems to be a new development.  I found my appointment to be beneficial.   There is nothing unethical about this.  We are not talking about the pharmacist at the drugstore providing medical care.

@juanitalinda did you take coq10 while on statins? Statins can deplete coq10 levels causing the symptoms you describe. Many people take CoQ10 along with statins for this reason.

The OP used the term pharmacist, which I think a reasonable assumption would be she meant a pharmacist at a drug store. Thanks for clearing that up!

No I haven't tried CoQ10, but then again, my doctor didn't recommend it either.

I will keep that in mind though.

@juanitalinda I have to say that I am incredibly surprised that your doctor did not suggest taking CoQ10 along side your statin from the very beginning especially when you reported muscle issues.  If so inclined, do a bit of research on the topic and then bring it up with your doctor should you decide to try statins again.  I take 10mg of Atorvastatin daily along with 100mg of CoQ10.
