Anyone here had surgery to repair this? Or been diagnosed with This? It is really quite common, especially in men after Age 60 and it affects women as well.
I have been reading up on this since my husband was diagnosed with it just this week after his yearly physical. He went in for a sonogram today and they now want him to have a CT scan next Monday and see to a Vascular surgeon to decide what should be done.
It it is a good thing to catch early, as you so not want it to burst or bleed....but, surgery is major surgery. Just wondering if anyone here has been through this or knows some one who has?

My mother was diagnosed with this about 20 years ago. At the time, hers was 9 centimeters (very large). Her vascular surgeon sent her to the Cleveland Clinic for what was then an experimental surgery. All went well. She lived another 10 years and died at the age of 83 from heart failure. If they suggest surgery, do it. Her gp knew she had it, but didn't follow up on keeping an eye on it. She was lucky they found it when they did.
Good luck.

My best female friend has this, I believe they have size parameters that will dictate if you need surgery or not. It is monitored every 6 months or so if it is smaller than the size that needs an operation. From what I had read it is a tricky operation so I would get a second opinion if I was told I needed it.

@dsky I read that eventually anyone with it even if it is small, will have to have surgery eventually.

@SeaMaiden My 85 year old uncle had that survery more than 25 years ago and lived long after that--and died from something else! Best wishes and prayers to you and yours!

My 83 year old mother was diagnosed with an abdominal aneurysm about 5 years ago. It is 4cm and 5cm is the requirement for surgery by local surgeons here. Mom fully understands what happens if an aneurysm ruptures, but refuses to worry about it. I do not share her views and several decisions she has made with end of life measures, but will see that her wishes are carried out.

I have one but apparently it's small enough to not require surgery. My doctor monitors it regularly, along with all my other diagnoses.

My beloved mother had seen a physician (hers) two weeks before anyone ever knew, or had taken the time to go further, i.e., symptoms.
I came {{back}} home, and she died within hours.
Her final reason - - how she died that soon
was ______* Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm*_______
She had been under a (may I call him at the top) doctor's personal care. Very Young, also.
Medicine: As I witness today:
Too sloppy, in a hurry, THEIR ``big mistake``!

Yes, runs on my fathers side. He had successful surgery by the Mayo Clinic, caught early. Had few post surgery issues because of the long incision, but overall good recovery time. His brother was not so lucky, he did not survive , but did not know he had till it was too late. Mayo told us mostly in males over the age of 60 and in those who smoke. Hope your husband has a successful surgery and a quick recovery.

I know two men who had this. One was discovered while asymptomatic. He got an x-ray for a back problem and it was found. The other one was an emergency situation and was caught just in time
Both are fine and doing well!
