The active ingredient, potassium nitrate, found in some of these new desensitizing toothpastes might be the culprit. Potassium is known to affect nerves and muscles by altering the ionic (electrical) component of them. This is why it's used to calm the nerves in the dentin of teeth but it can also affect muscles, for example the heart muscle. Some people take potassium supps to help with muscle cramps or as a diuretic, for examples.

I've read articles to NOT purchase toothpaste from Dollar Stores --- they're either expired, foreign, or Not ADA Approved Formulations. Toothpaste is so inexpensive - Costco or Walmart --- do not mess with ur teeth. Definitely don't allow children to use it. Read article.

@OhioAngel, at my last dental appointment, my dentist told me not to use Crest anything. LM

I was just at the dentist today and I mentioned how sensitive my teeth have been. I too have always used Crest and he told me to stop! Also he said to not use any thing that will whiten your teeth. Just use a regular toothpaste, nothing fancy. So I'm going to try that and see if it will help. But I was sure shocked to hear him say to stop using Crest.
