Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

I had an upper molar extracted during the height of Covid.  It had been getting infected too often so it was time for it to be removed.  It also could not be saved.

I was very nervous but the whole procedure was really not bad at all.  I had my dentist extract the tooth and he's the type who is a chatterbox which helps me to get my mind off of what he's doing.

I also had a combination of Novocaine and nitrous oxide gas which calms my nerves.  The worst is after when the Novocaine has worn off and it might hurt a bit but not as much as when it is infected.

I know it's hard not to worry but you should be fine.

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

I was so anxious to get the infected tooth out that it was a relief to me once it was out. I had two wisdom teeth and a lower molar pulled by the same periodontist so I knew the novocaine would be fine for me. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.

As someone said earlier, you will need to use cold packs on the area for the first day. They sent me home with one of the packs you just pop to activate. I had several of those in my cupboard (always good to keep on hand) and used them for the first 24 hours. You may want to have some on hand.

Any kind of surgery, whether oral or other, is a stress to your system. Just plan to relax for the rest of the day and you will be fine!

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

@LTT1   oh goodness!  you are so brave to endure that kind of pain!

i had an absessed upper back molar  (not my first) . it started when i was travelling in Europe so by the time we returned  had a bit of a wait to see my dentist.  horrible pain, i had Vicodin i popped every few hours even at night it was excruciating. Endodontist cleaned out the infection and performed a root canal.

Another time years ago i had a different unsalvagable upper molar pulled for a future bridge. the tooth pulling was fine, just some pain after.  a temp crown was cemeted in (i thought)  .Started new job just before Halloween.  was at work less than 2 weeks, we wore costumes and i put in my fake vampire teeth. we were all standing around laughing.  when i pulled the fake teeth out along came the temp crown.   bled like mad, had to leave work to see dentist.  embarrassing!

from what i recall,  you cannot spit after and cannot use a straw. lots of ice cream though and popsicles

best wishes!  you will be fine!

Unless it's really hard,  I would think that they would use  novicane.

Patients can ask for anesthesia, as long as they are willing to pay for it.

Well, I didn't have the tooth extraction yet! I arrived to the place but became concerned...

was I having anesthesia or not?

The office told me I wasn't... but I'd want anesthesia. So, they re-scheduled it for July 1st!

@LTT1  - Are you going completely under?

I had a tooth removed a few years ago.  I just had the laughing gas (Nitrous oxide) and novacaine.  Was fast and painless.  Even afterwords, I popped a few regular OTC Ibuprofen and that was it.   I had a script for the Ibuprofen 800, but never used it.

Good luck.  Keep us posted.  I hate going to the dentist!!

I've had about every dental procedure known to mankind (except implants).  All I can say is, thank goodness for modern dentistry!!!

Speaking of modern dentistry @DottieBlue , can you imagine the pain people went through before modern dentistry came about?  You probably know this, but many years ago, before dentists were a thing, people went to their barber for dental problems.  It's awful the suffering people went through way back when!

I'm very fortunate that my nephew, that I babysat many times when I was a teenager, is now my dentist. His wife is also a dentist. 🦷 He was such a wild child growing up and now... he and his two brothers are dentists, doctors, and nursing anesthetists. They all fit in with the rest of my family! 🩵

@LTT1   Sorry you had to reschedule.  I had a back molar pulled a few years ago.  I have two implants, and did not get one for this upper molar.  I had an oral surgeon in North Hills.  They were fabulous.  Have gone to them for many years. (Even back in my 20's).  Done, in and out.  The novacain took longer than the extraction.

Best wishes.

@lynnie61  -  I was surprised how quick and easy it was when I had my tooth removed.  It was painless.
