I'm scheduled for tooth extraction tomorrow.
Trying not to think about it too much...

It has been kind of a nightmare because starting Memorial Day weekend my tooth up into my ear and sinus was throbbing.

The following Monday my dentist took a look and pronounced that the teeth could not be saved and would need to be removed.

Being new to Pittsburgh, I feel as if I'm going blindly into an unknown situation.

I've read reviews (they are good) and my dentist did refer me...

I just do not know what to expect and the infection has been present a very long time I'm guessing?
Any suggestions I would welcome.

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

Have some soft things to eat for the next few days as well as soups.

They may have you take ibuprofen before the procedure or immediately afterwards to " get ahead " of any post procedure pain.  Follow the after care carefully.

You will be numbed but you will still be aware of sounds....that can be scary.  While in the chair, rather than pain, you will feel a pressure in the area where the extraction is taking place.  It will be quick and you will be relieved and ready for the aftercare.

Might be nice to have someone take you rather than drive or negotiate public transportation yourself.  Either way, take a supply of paper towels or thick tissues in case there is some slight bleeding.

Good Luck....it'll be over soon !

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

LTT1, i just had tooth pulled about 2 weeks ago...

he/she will numb you

pull it

over!

the longest part is waiting to get numb.

extraction about 10 seconds.  i had very minimal bleeding.  it will be sore for a few days... tylenol, motrin helps.  don't chew on that side for a few days after..  depending on infection, they might prescribe an antibiotic.

are u getting an implant?   bridge?

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

@LTT1   I had an extraction last year. I went to an amazing oral surgeon that came highly recommended.   The extraction didn't take that long and was not painful at all.  I was prescribed pain meds for after that I didn't need.  The worst part for me was holding the gauze in my mouth that almost made me gag a few times.

It was my very last upper left back molar.  I chose to get an implant,  again,  by the same oral surgeon.  I'm so happy that I did.

All the best to you.  Go in brave,  with your head up. If your doctor came highly recommended,  you should be fine.   Have you thought about an implant?  They are by no means inexpensive,  but a great option if you can do it.

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

I had a tooth extracted last August due to an infection in the tooth.  What hurt the most was the injection to numb the area.  The extraction itself is quick.  I did bleed for a number of hours afterward.  The doctor prescribed 800mg of Motrin and codeine pills but only had to take a limited number of the Motrin.  You will survive!!!

@hkrgrl @jlkz

Thank you both for your helpful comments!

I will be very grateful to get this taken care of because based on the degree of throbbing pain I experienced, I feel the infection has probably been there a long time and was extensive.

The amoxicillin finally worked yesterday...it was a long RX to be taken every 8 hours.

At first, I kept waking up during the night about the time the medicine wore off.

My dentist suggested Advil "Dual Action" and still I had to supplement with excedrin on top of that.

It's pretty effective...he didn't seem to want to RX a pain med so the first week I didn't sleep much.

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

@LTT1 , I hope all goes well for you. I had to have an extraction/implant during Covid. I have relatively healthy teeth and had only had extractions in my late 20s when I had to have four done to prepare for braces. Yes, I'm generally late for the game! I have ultimate trust in my current dentist and he did a wonderful job when I finally could get it done. A tooth that had a crown had cracked in the root and the pain was so bad that I didn't care what he had to do to get it out, just wanted it out. The pain went from the temple down to my shoulder and nothing I took could take it away. I've never had a minutes trouble with it since and actually almost fell asleep in the chair while he was working on me!

Take whatever pain meds he prescribes, mine was just a mix of acetaminophen/ibuprofen. He told me to take it as soon as I got home, before the shot wore off, and for as long as I had pain. I did as he said, only needing it for that day. My stomach doesn't like ibuprofen so I was worried.

My suggestion would be for any soft foods, I think I only did liquids for the first few days, nothing too hot or too cold, and I "babied" that side of my mouth for that first week, but I'm not sure it was necessary, I just didn't want to take a chance of the pain returning.

Sending good thoughts for it all to go easy and well for you.

Re: Tooth Extraction Tomorow

@Carolina925

Thank you so much for these suggestions!

I will order some groceries today for more soft foods/soups, etc.

Anything that was hard to chew seemed to set off the pain.

The amoxicillin has begun to work as of yesterday ...today was my last pill.

Fingers crossed that the pain doesn't start up again.

You were lucky you had so much trust in your dentist. I'm new to this area so going in blindly...but it must be done!

I can sure relate to "just wanting this tooth (teeth) out".  My teeth have always been problematic.... ouch!
