Dr. Oz is insane and I actively avoid anything that's on his show.

My sonic toothbrush and Water-Pik keep my teeth and gums healthy.

I so agree. I posted an interesting article from Snopes on oil pulling on the Beauty Board today.

Thank goodness he limited it to teeth, mouth, and gums, which is what the science backs up. Some people are swearing it cures everything.

Hi! I am in my mid-50's and I have started doing this technique with my favorite organic virgin coconut oil after I brush and floss my teeth several times per week. The organic virgin coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral, and anti fungal. The oil tastes so good that it is hard to keep from swallowing the oil. Once melted in the mouth, it has a watery consistency and light coconut flavor. While working on the computer, I swished the oil for a full hour the first time, but normally I do it for 15 minutes. Be sure to spit the used oil in the trash. I found the helpful Y**T*** video by Dr. Joseph Mercola in which he explains coconut oil pulling for better oral health. His site also has articles about (virgin) coconut oil including one about using it to fight tooth decay. I use organic virgin coconut oil as my main cooking oil and as a daily health supplement to feed the brain. I am hoping to avoid Diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and other nervous system problems as I age. These dietary oils help me to absorb fat soluble vitamins, such as D, A, and K. My less-health-educated sister had her gall bladder out years ago and it is an oil that she can digest because it is a special medium chain fatty acid. I hope that this helps.

Tricia, Perhaps you can tell me, I keep asking, how does one make a coconut organic? You might want to read what I posted on the beauty board.

ITA. Dr.Oz almost threw up on his on show when he tried pulling. H e could not wait to spit it out. What kills me is how many crazy people from this wonderful and the most advanced country are willing to do what is being practiced in totally hygienically inferior countries. Anything that comes from places where people are dying in their own filth is super cool for some individuals. People, if you want healthy mouth and body, floss every day, brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, watch your stomach and sinuses(sources of bad odor),eat healthy food , move around and try to be positive .

You can do oil pulling any time of day & more than once a day is fine - but not really necessary. I usually only do it once per day and usually in the evening.

Bird, oil pulling has removed built-up plaque from my teeth. It is amazing! I tend to get buildup on the backs of my lower front teeth despite all my attempts to prevent it. Regular oil pulling removes it. If I would stick with it I would never have any to remove but I tend to do it in spurts.

I've heard the oil pulling helps with loosening plaque buildup. As much as I brush, floss and use GUM Soft Picks AND get my teeth cleaned every three months, I still end up with plaque!! My hygienist once told me that my body produces a lot of calcium, thus all the plaque. For that reason alone I'm willing to try oil pulling. Most articles I've read say to do for 20 minutes. I've read that you can start with 5 minutes and work your way up to 20 minutes. This is most likely what I'll do since I have a terrible gag reflex. I've also read that you can split the 20 minutes into two 10 minute sessions but that the best time is in the morning before you've had anything to drink or eat. Anyway, ladies, wish me luck. I'll post after to let you all know how it turned out.

Good luck, TootyJane. I tried it yesterday and again this morning. It is easiest when you do it just before entering the shower, as you are distracted by your morning routine.

Results from personal experience-- teeth are definitely cleaner feeling. Teeth feel as if you just had a professional cleaning with polishing. There is a whitening effect, although subtle so far, for me. Take enough but not too much at once, so you won't gag.

Verdict - I think this might have some actual merit and value, regardless of what other people say or think. Trying an established Ayurvedic practice is not "crazy," at least not in my opinion. To each their own.
