Is Benadryl perscription or over the counter since most of you wrote about it? Thank you all for answering.

Benadryl is an over the counter antihistamine and can make people very sleepy. The active ingredient used is the same used in most over the counter sleeping pills. If you use it, prepare to take a nap. It's best used at night. You can also try some of the over the counter antihistamines that are less likely to cause drowsiness, but still may in some people. Ask the pharmacist for a recommendation and tell him or her it's for hives, because the recommendation may be different.
A nasal/allergy antihistamine blocks one type of histamine (H-1), but not another type. Over the counter antacids like Ranitidine (Zantac is the brand name) block the H-2 histamines and are less likely to cause drowsiness.
When I got hives earlier this month, I took both types of antihistamines in the forms of Zytec and Ranitidine to block both H-1 and H-2 histamines. It's a trick I learned from a friend's father, who is a gastroenterologist.

@halfpint1 Any update about your hearing test and the noise situation?
Using the suggested creams should be temporary and not used on large areas of the body; do see your doctor for advice if the itching continues.
Be well.

Benadryl is the best for hives especially . They will make you very drowsy if your not used to taking this medication though so be aware of that. I take it before bedtime every night so I'm used to it. I would also see a dr if it continues.

Sometimes it's a combination of things.
It took me forever to figure out that the combination of and cinnamon causes hives in some people.

I can't see my doctor until next month. So I will answer here.
I do not know how to answer under the person who wrote. If you can tell me I would appreciate it.
I did throw away the cream I found for it was old. Now it feels like fleas for one of my cats likes to sleep or in the room with me.
For the person asked about the noise I hear I no longer take my anxiety or melotonin pill.I have to live with the noise which I still believe in the attic and no one else. I hear it over at my son's--a noise like it--his ac machine.

@halfpint1- why did you stop the medication? Benadryl will help with itching.
