@Annabellethecat66 :  Wow!  We live in a small resort community in mountains of AZ but last week we drove two hours to Flagstaff, were seen by a specialist after DH had an MRI locally.  Everything is shut down but this was considered a medical necessity.  Imho, your is also medically necessary.  If it was me, I'd go to the Dr's office in person, insist on seeing a medical professional to answer your questions.  If your Dr. can't see you, I'm sure another medical professional in VA(or D.C., or MD.) can see you!

Re: Sign of the Times

@Annabellethecat66  Oh, I remember the pain of several fractures in my back following an auto accident. You have my heartfelt sympathy and concern for timely care without having to dress and make numerous appointments. Back injuries are SO painful.

If possible, does your Ortho. Surgeon provide full body braces? While in the ER, my PCP had a brace fitter specialist sent out since I wouldn't see the Ortho. Surgeon for 10-14 days due to the Christmas/New Year's holidays. The brace was wonderful support and the Ortho. Surgeon had me wear it 24/7 for several months rather than use the cement stuff in my back since I had some osteoporosis. The cement stuff could have simply lead to other breaks according to my Rheumatologist. Of course the Ortho. Surgeon didn't like that idea, but research and common sense made much more sense than filling up the three fractures with cement. Plus, I'm allergic to all anesthics. The cement procedure simply wasn't a good "fit" for me for several reasons. It may work perfectly for you!

I had a lot of x-rays, but didn't have any MRI's until complaining about knee pain AFTER a couple of months of vigerous PT in July and August. The Ortho. Surgeon looked at my black/blue knee and said, "It's a bruised bone" every time I had an appointment! Yea. I get that, but there's something else going on. d

Finally in October, I begged for an MRI. The Ortho. Surgeon turned me over to the knee surgeon, who immediately sent me for my FIRST MRI. Yes . . . my knee also had been fractured! By then it had healed; but had fractured again in the PT. Another leg brace for six weeks!

Immediately, the Ortho. Surgeon scheduled me for an MRI for my BACK in late October. By than, I had already finished PT months ago and had not worn the back brace since summer! He was covering his @$$ ten months too late. That was a waste of money and a real head shaker! But I went and had the MRI completed. That Ortho. Surgeon was awful, but  recommended by the ER. If it wasn't for my Rheumatologist, I'm afraid my back would never have recovered in almost pre-accident condition.

I can live with the ache, but would have had major life challenges with a continued painful back. His partner, the knee surgeon, was excellent.

Sending you thoughts and prayers for rest, rest, and more rest. You already know no bending, twisting, picking up things, etc. Be careful getting in and out of bed, in the bathroom and kitchen.

We're still closed down, as well. Will your daughter be able to help with groceries, meals, etc.? It's so difficult to ask someone else do your shopping! We're used to our own independence. But staying flat on your back is the best thing for you right now. Let those vertebrae heal properly until you are able to see the Dr., have the MRI and whatever else needs to be done. If you are able to have a full body brace, you'll love the support provided by it (even though awkward to wear and put on/take off).

I did walk each day on the flat sidewalk outside, but doubt it would have been possible without that wonderful full body back brace. Walking kept my strength and muscles intact throughout those long months. It did, however, have friends notice my posture was not as straight as before which is why I went to PT.

So sorry you are going through such pain and angst. Keep us updated on what happens and how you are feeling. I care and hope your healing is swift and you feel like yourself soon. Sending air hugs and best wishes!

My Rheumatologist took me off Prolia (2 x a year) and placed me on FOLEO (daily injections for 24 months). Following the 24 months, I'll return to the Prolia (twice per year) for the rest of my life as maintenance. My back has a slight ache below the bra line, but the pain is gone. And no cement or surgery.

A quick up date then back to bed.

Can you believe I'm finally getting an MRI at 8:15 PM tonight near where my daughter lives.

Thankfully my daughter from Denver came in last night to help me.  Although I'm pretty independent.

My daughter called the Drs office this morning to get me an appointment for tomorrow.

The answering service picked up and said there was no one in the office today.  I don't know what that's about!  But she said she'd pass on to the Dr that I called and to please call me.

It's now about 2:10 in the afternoon and I still haven't heard from anyone.

This is crazy.  I'm now afraid since it's now today been 16 DAYS since the accident, that the thing(s) have started healing "incorrectly".

I'm not looking forward to laying on that cold hard metal tomb for so long hearing that dreadful noise...but you gotta do what you've gotta do.

Right?  Thanks for all good wishes.  Take care sweet ladies.  Fondly, Annabellethecat.

@Annabellethecat66  YEA! The new MRI's are not as loud and headphones help so much. Choose a great jazz to drown out any noise! Hope you find today's MRI far better than in the past.

I'm so pleased your daughter is there to help and you have an appointment so much earlier. She must take after her mother (in a good way!) Smiley Very Happy

Hope the results provide answers and your Dr. is able to see you sooner  than previously expected. Stay in bed and rest. So sorry about your fall and the resulting painful injuries to your back.

Thanks for the update, which is great news.

Was there any reason why you didn't call 911 after you fell?

An update.  So, with the help of my daughter (Denver daughter) she drove me to get the MRI and I finally heard from another ortho Dr in the same practice (there are 25 offices I found out).

Her nurse told me I'd have to get a CT scan and lots of bloodwork....(all on a Friday with the virus affecting everything).

First my daughter picked up the orders from the NEW Drs office.  Then she drove us to get the CT scan...forgive me but I don't remember if I told you I had to get the MRI at 8:15 that's PM.

Drs orders in hand and we found a place where I could (quickly get the CT scan).  Then the CT people said there was a place across the street (basement with paper signs) where I could get the bloodwork done.

It was like I was going into some dark hole never to be heard from again.  I went down in the elevator ....down...down...finally the doors flew open and there were (again) paper signs saying, "Bloodwork"  (for real)..I think they were hoping to stay hidden.  Ha!

At the end of the hall was another sign that said, "Bloodwork here".  There were two people sitting in one of the three plastic chairs.  (They were together but when the door opened...only he (the person getting the bloodwork) could come in.

She and I sat their staring at each other for around 10-15 minutes.  Then the door opens and out he comes and the nice young lady looked at me and said, "next".

I went into this room where it looked like shower curtains were drawn.  She pulled back the curtain and asked me to 'please sit'.

I handed her the paperwork and she left for another five or more minutes...came back and said, "that's wrong".  After a few minutes she came back with 6 vials of blood.

I'd just had a thyroid visit done one maybe 3 or so weeks ago so I hoped I'd made more good blood (just kidding).

Anyway, I told her exactly where to take it (ahhhh!  Don't we all have that magic blood vein that keeps on giving?

Six vials later she wrapped something around my arm and I was off.

By then it was probably about 6:00 PM.

Driving into Fairfax on the major highway it was a nightmare.  The rain was some of the hardest I'd seen in a long time.  They're always working on these roads so we hit some major pot holes.....I kept asking God to just get us there an not have a flat tire.

The man upstairs delivered....and so we were on our final quest (the CT and bloodwork).

OK, so you guys know how I'm always telling you how easily I make friends (it's good and bad).

In the maybe 10 minutes while I was waiting to get the CT scan, there were only 5 of us in the room.

Right before they called me back I started talking to a lovely lady.  We were talking about how people get a back ache and think they know what pain is....we laughed at that....

Long story short I ended up telling her about the cream I have made at a Compound Center.  Insurance doesn't pay for it and you need a prescription but I told her when she puts it on..."She'll hear the angels sing" (meaning the muscle will relax an so will the pain).  It doesn't last like a pill or injection, but it really helps.

She quickly wrote her name and phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to me as I walked in to get the CT.

I haven't had a chance to send the ingredients (what I can see) to her so she can tell her Drs but I will tomorrow.  The price has gone up.  Now it's around around $135 or more per tube but it's worth every penny.  Insurance doesn't pay for it.

So, that's the update.  My daughter (as she always does) treats me like a Queen.  She is a wonderful person all around.

I'd never have been able to find any of these places or even drive there.  I take it very seriously when I'm taking muscle relaxers (only at night).

I'm due to get the vertebrae and bulging discs (whatever) 'cemented' on Tuesday morning.

My daughter keeps saying, "Mom...I'm worried they'll come up with some other 'thing' we need to provide BEFORE you get this done".

I keep saying, "Sussshhhh!  Don't even think that way".

I am so afraid that since it's been almost a month it hasn't started healing the wrong way...fingers crossed.

Stay tuned dear ladies...Thank you for your prayers....I believe they do help.

ps...I know Bill has given me sweet looks like, "I'm sorry Mom".  He's been sneezing like crazy so my friend (the Vet's nurse is bringing her stethoscope to listen to him and find out what the Vet recommends for allergies).

I almost forgot as I was walking in to get the CT scan a lady came into the building at the same time.  She was so bent over I don't know how she could see in front of herself.  She walked with a cane in each hand.

On the elevator she said she was 83 years old.  The conversation started when I said, "I was hoping I'd manage to get through life without something like this virus happening...I'm 73 and thought I'd beat the odds".  That when she told me she was 83 and she totally agreed with me.

But as I was sitting outside of the building waiting for my daughter to swing back and pick me up.  An elderly man walked past pushing his wife(maybe).  She had a scarf around her head (like chemo) and her legs were all cut up and swollen (like she'd been in a car accident).

Anyway, he pulled up the minivan to get her in it.  The back seat swung out making it easier to transfer someone from the wheelchair to the seat.

But it was dead weight because it seemed that she was paralyzed.  As he tried mayb 3 times to lift her off of the wheelchair, he lifted up up and suddenly the two of them hit the ground at the same time.  I wanted to go to help them, but with my back in so much pain, I'd just have made things worse.

There was a car behind them (to let someone off).  The driver got out of her car and asked if she could help...at the same time the people who let you in and out of the building (there was even a cop there) came running out to help.

I got into my daugher's car and we pulled away (making it easier for the man to pull away from pickup).

You know it makes a person realize there are people in this world struggling in life with no one to help them.

My late husband used to be a volunteer driver for the cancer society.  Here was this man who had maybe 6 businesses, traveling constantly to Florida and places; but when the Cancer Society lady called, he always told her he was available.  He would change everything to be a driver.  If they couldn't walk, he'd carry them.  He was very muscular and worked out every day.  There are good people in this world and my husband was one of them.

Stay tuned ...I'll keep you guys updated.  I have to go lay down now because it hurts to sit up.

@BirkiLady   Won't be long and I'll be able to wear my Birkenstock sandals...Gotta love those sandals.  Ha!

Yes, I'm sure after she "cements" the back stuff I'll have to wear a back brace for awhile.

With all my chub (stomach) it isn't going to be as easy as it was when I broke the 3 at the age of 18.  Back then I was only 115 lbs and young.  I remember the thing.  It was made of material and laced up like the corsets people used to wear.  It was exactly measured to me.

I had to lay in bed at the hospital for 3 weeks without moving.  It takes concentration to do one's toilet business laying flat in bed.

I wore that thing the last few weeks of high school.

I'd skipped my Junior year of high school.  But I had to go to summer school for one class (US Government) Five days a week for 6 weeks for 5 hours each day.

In the Summer in a school that had no air conditioning and me wearing that hot brace all day.

But I did it.  I'm proud of that accomplishment.  I've had to do some very difficult things in my life (like many of you probably have had to.  But there's a satisfaction to be able to sit back and say, "I did it...I did it".

Right?  Don't you guys feel like that?

Take care.  I was ready to close up the computer and get back to bed when @BirkiLady I saw your post.  I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.

Anyone who loves Birkenstock is top notch in my book Heart

Happy to read that you had all of your preliminary tests and scans done.  Another prayer for quick relief after the procedure.  I find all of your posts so interesting even those that must be painful.  Good luck.
