Re: Question about probiotics

My gastro. dr. recommended Floristor.  I take them 2 times a day.  They are expensive.  Prices vary from store to store, but they are about $22.99 a box.  I would like to try a cheaper version but since he recommends these, I am hesitant.  I do think they make a difference and since I have so many issues, I think every little thing helps!!!  It might help to go on-line and read about probiotics.  Put your particular issues in and ask which type or strains of probitics would be most helpful.

@AngelPuppy1

They have it at Costco, if you shop there.

Re: Question about probiotics

I've never found a probiotic that did anything for me.  I've tried several from suggestions here.  Constipation is a problem for me and some, instead of helping, make it worse.

My gastro guy also recommended Florastor.

Re: Question about probiotics

I swear by Natren probiotics.  I've been taking them for twenty years.  They are very expensive, though, but in my case it's worth it.

Many probiotics are not effective.  Much like vitamins and other supplements, they are not controlled and some are just a waste of money. Do some research (all probiotics are not created equal), and try some of the suggestions you have gotten.

Best of health to you.

Specific strains of probiotics do different things.  For constipation you need a higher concentration of the acidophilus strains.  And you may need to take a higher dosage (more pills) than recommended until your system evens out.  The bifidus strains, for example, do firm up your stool, so you wouldn't want a higher concentration of those.

Re: Question about probiotics

The best thing to do when choosing a probiotic is to research the different probiotics to determine which has the strain(s) of bacteria that would be most beneficial to your particular problem or concern. Your pharmacist should also be able to assist you in that regard. A probiotic that may be best for one person may not be the best for the next person, so just asking for a recommendation of what someone else is taking may not best serve your purposes.

I take Culturelle, which contains Lactobacillus GG, which has been proven to be effective against C. difficile infection.

Whichever you choose, start off slowly with a lower dose. Your stomach may bubble with too high a dose, initially. It will adjust.

Re: Question about probiotics

Thanks, @geezerette.  I'll keep that in mind.  The last one I bought (2 times) is Rephresh.  I don't know that that one did anything for anything.  Five billion strains of something.  The writing is so small on the little bottle that I can't make it out.  I still have half of it left.

No, I don't have a Costco near me but I appreciate your suggestion.  I do have a Sam's club.  I wonder if they have them??

Re: Question about probiotics

I take one called Pure Restore 40+ (by Essence Labs) 15 strains, 35 billion. It is the kind that has to be refrigerated. I have known the health food store owner for years and this is the one she takes. They sell more of this one because people just seem to have better results with it.
