Well, I'm the one that is not a friend of Statins. My numbers were not excessive when Simvastatin was recommended to me. It worked, numbers came down nicely from 200. I had no idea what Statins were doing to me when at a little over 18 months of taking it, I realized everything I was complaining about was due to the Statin med. I had muscle weakness in my legs that was getting worse, electric shooting pains in my muscles. While watching TV, the pain would actually make me jump! Unable to get into our motorhome without seriously pulling myself up using the handle. I started doing some research, talked to my Dr. and stopped the medication. But some of the damage has lingered.
Meanwhile we moved out of state and my new doctor was skeptical. I'm being nice, she didn't believe me. Asked if I would take another med (for her) and see if that one would be better. I did and called her in three days! Three days! I had the same reaction and problems as before and quit immediately. Btw my cholesterol has never been much over 200.
I'm now officially "allergic" to Statins and am now on a non-Statin and we shall see..... I have some slight muscle weakness and a very slight balance issue since this all started that has never gone away..... and remember, prior to this, I was a successful, fully operating 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do Karate. Today I use a cane. Sure, I'm getting older but if you go to the website Spacedoc.com you can see for yourself what this medication did to an Astronaut.

@SilleeMee Great news! My doc tor office just called and said the doctor did not need to see me.My A1C had dropped from 6.3 to 6.1.So excited it had finally budged. The nurse said to keep doing what I'm doing.
I wanted to thank you again for the reference to Piping Rock. All the others had not worked.I,too, noticed the price and will seek out others.I made note of the one you mentioned. A sincere thank you again![]()

@Trinity11 Thanks so much for your kind wishes. It is not my cholestrol levels that needs help. My combined number is 164 and ratio 3.8.But my A1C had gone from 5.6 to 6.3 and my glucose from 95 to 128. Like I mentioned,I eat
good 95 % of the time and exercise 6 days a week. Yet my numbers won't move.
However, the doctor called today and he saw a decrease in my A1C. Oh happy days! My quest continues.Best wishes to you and your son![]()

@SeaMaiden wrote:I have been doing a life extention blood test for my cholestrol levels every four months over the past year ever since my yearly physical blood work up showed high cholestrol at 249. I have NEVER had high cholestrol in my life. Just seems since turning 60ish and past menopause it has become an issue.
I will and had have been doing ANYTHING to help lower it...
I take about 10 different supplements ( many mentioned here on this wellness chat board) lost almost 20 pounds and I watch every food I eat... NEVER eat fried food, red meat, watch my fats... only fat free dairy... I eat the healthy fats when I eat them on occation... I know what to eat and not to eat...
The good thing is that over the last 8 months, my total cholestrol has dropped 10 points. But, still remains on the high side. My Tryglycerides are not bad... and my good cholestrol has improved too....
Cholesterol, Total 220 High mg/dL
Triglycerides 101 mg/dL
HDL Cholesterol 71 mg/dL
VLDL Cholesterol Cal 18 mg/dL
LDL Chol Calc (NIH) 131 High
I guess I will start to exercise even more... that is about all I can think of to offset my high cholestrol levels...
I WILL NOT take statins or become a victim of the Pharmacutical industry... where one drug leads only to othe issues and problems that they give you MORE DRUGS FOR.
Anyone else have this issue with high cholestrol that no matter what you do it does not lower very much?

@SeaMaiden The first thing you should do is quit worrying about it. My mom is 100 and her numbers have always been bad. She took statins once and they were better, so she quit them and her numbers went back up.
She smoked, lived on sweets, and never exercised. So just relax, either take medicine or quit worrying about it. I have changed my eating and exercising habits radically over the last 20 years, numbers ok not great, but they really have never varied no matter what I do.
My advice? Worry about other things you can do something about, have fun, be nice to other people and feel good about it and take drugs or not. But it isn't worth worrying about.
So, and I mean this in the kindest way, get a new hobby. I just told myself this about an hour ago about something in my life, so I'm sharing with you my friend! ![]()
And if you think about reminding me occasionally, please do so! I need to hear it.

@Sooner YOU SAID : My advice? Worry about other things you can do something about, have fun, be nice to other people and feel good about it and take drugs or not. But it isn't worth worrying about.
I think you are absolutly right.... I doworry too much... I guess reading so much and hearing about women and heart disease it makes me worry... so I try to do my best to stay well. I appreciate your advise... sometimes I need some TOUGH LOVE to get myself thinking in a different direction for my mental health

All the ratios you mention are what I was referring to when I said "I have talked about this for years on this forum", in my 1st post in this thread. Dr. Kenneth Cooper wrote his 1st book about this back in the 1980's.
These facts were known that far back for anyone that was concerned enough to go to the library to gain information about them. I spoke of them here back in the 1990's, and many times since.
People see Total Cholesterol numbers and go bonkers for no true medical reason. That is specifically why I asked @SeaMaiden why she was "obsessed with her cholesterol numbers". I did not see her reply to my question, so I said no more.
Many doctors still tell their patients that "any medical numbers", are "in the normal range" and their patients accept that. I have always insisted on the full blood lipid test results, and I decide what those numbers mean. "Average/Good/Acceptable" are not good enough for me, and haven't been since the 1970's.
It was nice of you to post all this information. I did not because it did not appear the OP of this thread cared enough about it for me to spend my time typing it.
People need to be their own Advocate when it comes to their Health and overall Fitness. That cannot be done if they are ill informed about any "numbers" presented to them after any type of blood test.
I just had my blood drawn an hour ago at the hospital. It is drawn for specific reasons, which have nothing to do with my blood lipid panel. These are readings I understand completely because I have always made it a point to do so. That was many years before the Internet was available, which makes information so easy to research.
Those luxuries were not available years ago when I was pursuing everything I could learn about the human body, which has served me well. I suggest others do so before they get "obsessed" with numbers they do not fully comprehend.

@SeaMaiden Me too! And I gave it to myself too this morning.

@SeaMaiden Just came across your post and haven't read all of the responses but, for me, it's not about the fat although you do want to get rid of the saturated and trans.
For my numbers it was all about getting rid of the sugar. That was the only way it dropped for me.
Your body makes cholesterol to combat the damage sugar does to your arteries. Once I truly got all of the sugar, simple carbs (white foods), most fruit, and the actual sugary stuff, it went down to 200 total and 100 LDL which is about normal.
I do take Cholestacare by AL which has also helped. I just added in Berberine and I am looking forward to seeing if that helps further when my next round of testing comes up.
Good Luck!
