According to WebMD, 10-35% of your total daily calories should be protein but you have to be careful what that protein source is.  Protein helps to lose body fat and maintain lean muscle but it shouldn't come from unhealthy sources everyday either.

True.

Unhealthy sources such as meat, cheese, eggs.

 

Those %s  mentioned could e.a.s.i.l.y. be obtained from

a whole food plant based sources with 

much, much less inflammation & long-term damage to the body. 

 

And of course, higher % of protein brings higher % of fat, as well.

 

The validity of eating protein to 'lose body fat' & 'maintain lean muscle'

is the result of heavy Marketing by the National Livestock & Meat Board,

California Dairy Farmers & the American Egg Board. 

Funny how people have bought into this hype!

 

Such Bro-Science.

It a question asked a 1000x a day for plant-based people,

"Where do you get your proooooteeeeeen?"

Did someone actually say that no one knows why we need protein?

 

Proteins are the building blocks of human and animal structure.  Proteins serve innumerable functions in the human body, including the following:  formation of the brain, nervous system, blood, muscle, skin, and hair; the transport mechanism for iron, vitamins, minerals, fats, and oxygen; and is the key to acid-base and fluid balance.  Antibodies that the body makes to fight infection are made from proteins.

 

You can certainly get your proteins from plant sources, but you have to properly combine them to get all of the amino acids necessary for synthesis.

 

All sources that are legit recommend between 10% and 35% of your total daily calories come from proteins, 45% to 65% from carbohydrates. and 20 to 35% from fats.

 

If you are athletic, you may need the upper end of protein for proper muscle repair, and the upper end of carbohydrates for energy requirements.

 

I've eaten in the range of 90-100 (give or take) grams of protein per day for decades.  I work out hard, and am healthy and fit.   I can give kids 1/3 my age a run for their money.  

 

Yeah, I guess that's bragging.

Another long-standing myth.

 

As my fav Dr. says, 

"....incorporation of protein into the muscles

follows hard work, not “hard eating.”

 

And I would add 'hard sleep' & 'hard recovery.'

 

"....it is imperative that you understand the higher protein needs of athletes do not mean athletes need to eat foods (diets) more concentrated in protein – like more meat, poultry, fish, and eggs – or worse yet take concentrated protein supplements. They simply need to eat more food."

 

The Public confuses Health with Fitness.

They see someone lean, muscles popping...assuming they

are healthy....then someone like Bob Harper has a

heart attack at 51yrs old.  That SHOULD make people stand up &

take notice, but it doesn't.  Too much protein causes so

much inflammation in the body.

 

The tree of Marketing Myths have very deep roots.

And people s.t.i.l.l. buy in.  Crazy.

Bob Harper is now asking for vegans to leave him alone and stop telling him he is going to have a second heart attack because he eats fish. He is eating what his physicians have prescribed for him. He's eating the Mediterranean dietary plan and said his family history contributed to causing his heart attack. I know for myself it was a weak heart from rheumatic fever that scarred my heart and left it weak. I also have many auto-immune diseases. 

 

Everyone is different. No one should give medical advice to people they don't have any idea what under-lying illnesses cause their heart disease. To do so is cavalier and ignorant.

You have so much bad information it's hard to know where to start.

 

Protein is needed for muscle repair.  Muscles need the full compliment of amino acids to repair and grow.  They need hard work and then they need rest.  It's not complicated.  

 

Physiology is what it is.   

 

How did Bob Harper get into your response to me?

 

I am not confused about health, nor am I confusing it with fitness.  

 

I am not a victim of Marketing Myths.  But you might very well be.

Just to add that you don't have to eat meat, eggs, or any kind of animal source protein to get the Essential Amino Acids.  But you DO have to combine plant sources or you won't get them all.

 

It's just science.  I'm not selling hot dogs.

Hokay.  Doesn't change the fact that you still have to be cognizant of the need to combine many plant proteins to get all the amino acids.  I have never disparaged those you are vegetarian or vegan, it's an option.  It's not the ONLY option for good health.

 

You still fail to say why you brought up Trainer Bob.  Do you really think that no one who eats a mostly starch diet never has a heart attack?

 

You're a good little cherry picker.

 

Just don't eat too many potatoes.  You wouldn't want to get too much protein!
