Re: I think I have a form of PSTD

[ Edited ]

@Mz iMac  I'd be interested in hearing more about your apartment generator. The ones I've seen look to be virtually pointless as all they're good for is providing some light, charging devices and maybe powering a small 'camping' refrigerator... In other words, you're still out of luck with cooking, fridge, a/c and so on... I too live in a condo, in my case a mid rise, and what I can tell you about our association generators is that they're only intended to provide limited emergency lighting but don't provide squat other than that. I suspect. depending on the size of the complex, a do it all generator would be prohibitively costly but I do wish we had them

I'm in the middle, I guess. I don't see it as PTSD-worthy, but, to me, it's more than a real pain... No heat or air, no capacity to cook or microwave, no TV or computer, no lights, no way to protect the very expensive and sometimes hard to come by food we have on hand, sometimes no land line telephone or cell service... Yep, more than just a pain in my book...

I freak out when there's lightning. My house was struck and the lightning fried everything electric/electronic...anything that was plugged into the wall got wasted.  Cost me a fortune to replace everything and that took a long time to do. I panic when there's lightning...I can't help it.

Re: I think I have a form of PSTD

Last year I didn't have electricity for three days.

I had plenty of flashlights and kept the refrigerator door closed as much as possible.

I thought of it as an adventure.

Imagine how how our great-grandparents lived before electricity came along!

I entertained myself by doing word searches, sudoku,  read and listened to the battery operated radio.

It wasn't a crisis, it wasn't a catastrophe, nor did I treat it as such.

To me using the term PTSD for a stressful, but not life-threatening, event cheapens what veterans and crime victims go through.  A bit too much drama...

i do understand the stress of losing power though.

As a wife of a partially disabled vet, I agree. PTSD gets thrown around a lot by people who haven't even been formally diagnosed with it.

Maybe go to a hotel for a weekend or go to your cabin or summer home for some respite.

Yes, you may have a very mild version of post-traumatic stress.  I wouldn't want to confuse it however with feelings of people who've dealt with very serious situations over a long period of time - what we usually think of as PTSD.

@tansy

Agreed.

Just because one is worried about something, the "what ifs", that is NOT PTSD.

I think people are calling every fear, and worry "PTSD", when it doesn't meet the clinical definition of it.

And you're right, it cheapens those who have true clinical, diagnosable PTSD.

To temporarily lose power is not really a big deal.  If you're making it a big deal, you should seek some advice from a professional.   It's an inconvenience, but it shouldn't induce anxiety.  There are many ways to cope with a temporary power outage.

I agree - losing power shouldn't be a big deal.  Please plan for the next event.  If you're prepared, you won't be stressed.
