I've never noticed if any of those things make a difference for me. I exercise regularly and do not eat sugars or grains, limit caffeine, too. I suppose those things might make mine better (did not do any of it in hopes it would help With hot flashes, etc. but for other reasons) but it is still way too bad to just live with it.
My hot flashes are worst during the day and I'd have a hard time w/o the Smoky Mountain Naturals products I use.
I think speaking to your personal physician works best. They know our medical history and some over the counter remedies are contra-indicated in individuals taking meds. I know I need to avoid most herbal products and soy. Heart disease and a prior history of cancer makes them even dangerous for me...same may be for others.

I went the route of bio-identical hormones. Your doc tests your blood chemistry to see the % of your hormones. At a pharmacy that creates a unique RX for you, your hormones are brought back into balance. Sometimes the estrogen in manufactured pills are either too high or too low. This way you are given the exact % your body needs to put you back in balance. Consult your physician to see if they do this testing or can give you a referral. I first heard about it reading the book by Robin McGraw (Dr. Phil's wife).

I agree that it is important to talk with one's doctor about this. Mine understood my reasons for not wanting to take the manmade hormones/drugs and he adds proved of the SMN products I am using. They are safe to use and don't have me risking cancer by using them.

I was on Estrogen after my hysterectomy and I felt like a new person. I could not take the Estrogen & Progesterin together as the Progesterin did not agree with me but that is your best bet if you are not in a high category for cancer. It's a tough stage in your life and I always wonder why women have to go through so much.
Once a lady has a hyster she doesn't need the progesterone , just the estrogen. No doctor should be giving a post hyster patioent progesterone.
This is not 100% true across the board.
I'd be taking the advice of my doctor before someone's on this board especially when a poster doesn't have the entire story like medical history.

I am with you, 64, and never had a hot flash!!!

I moved to a Paleo diet (Primal Blueprint) 2 years ago, so I don't eat sugar or gains and only organic and/or grassfed organic protein.
I exercise by doing cycle, water aerobics mainly.
I honestly had to google hot flashes because I thought they were some big sweaty thing, but in my case it was just a cycling of warm from the chest up.

Anyone know of something over the counter to help with hot flashes and night sweats? Mid 50's. Not fun!!
Too much fat or sugar in your diet and anxiety will make them worse. Check your diet, and relax/meditate.

I feel for you, dear lady. I am dealing with it for 5 years. It is getting better, I am doing it cold turkey, no hormones and antidepressants. Walking, Pilates ,yoga helps, I also upped magnesium, Calcium, vitamin D3. All helps. Stress, alcohol, spicy food makes things worse.
Good luck to you!
