No credible source anywhere has indicated a "return to normalcy " in 2 or 3 months.
Everything that I have read and heard indicates that current precautions will need to remain in place well into next year as vaccinations among the general population proceed; herd immunity can conceivably be reached at 75%-85% vaccination penetration by the end of 2021.

It isn’t the credible sources we need to be concerned about. It is the people who think they can go “back to normal” once they get the vaccine.
The experts really don’t know if we will ever get herd immunity. It is one big experiment.
I heard Fauci say recently to expect to continue with all safety measures at least through the end of 2021. The problem is that half the people aren’t practicing the safety measures now. Even in this thread people act like the vaccine means they can drop every other safety distancing measure once they get the vaccine.
I just don’t see the vaccine making much difference if people don’t do everything else, too. And, if everyone was practicing the safety measures there would not be the level of infection we see now.

I’m afraid you are just hearing what you want to hear, not what the experts are actually saying. Pay careful attention to the wording they use; it is very telling.
There is no science that says it will be safer once you get the vaccine. There is no science that says you can resume life as it used to be. It is all in theory. Proven science on the virus and the vaccine won’t be available for a long time. Both are very new and what is “known” is changing on a regular basis.

What people are ignoring is the fact that, in the vaccine trials, hardly anyone got infected even in the placebo group. They were practicing all the other safety measures, too. The trials prove we really don’t need vaccines. We really need to wear masks and practice social distancing. Adding a vaccine on top of that isn’t really necessary. But it sure will make some drug companies lots of money!

And magical thinking around science kills, as if the vaccine is a magic bullet.
The IHME's forecast for this country's death toll, WITH the vaccine, is 539,000 deaths by April 1.
"The forecasts now include scenarios of rapid vaccine rollout, expected rollout, and no vaccine. A rapid vaccine rollout is forecast to reduce the death toll to 528,000 in the US. The forecasts show that if mask-wearing increased to 95%, combined with expected vaccine rollout, approximately 66,000 lives could be saved, compared to a vaccine rollout scenario with current mask-wearing levels remaining the same. Even with a vaccine, if states do not act to bring current surges under control, the death toll could reach 770,000 by April 1."
Magical thinking says that vaccinated people will wear masks. I doubt that many will. What's shocked me about the figures I've seen is how little the vaccines will affect the death toll, at least into spring.
Speaking of "science," I learned yesterday that Dr. Fauci believes herd immunity is more like 85% or 90% for this virus, instead of the often-quoted 60% to 70%. But the real number isn't known, and the mutation that makes the virus more transmissible skews any prior attempt at calculation.

I understand that the elderly are no longer on the list of people who are up near the front behind grocery store clerks, etc.
Hummm???
If you are in the USA, it totally depends on your state and maybe even your county government who gets in line first, secon, third, fourth, etc. In some states, hospital staff who work directly with covid patients are first, then first responders and teachers, then it will be the elderly and those in group/community living arrangements. In other states, those over age 75 are not a priority so much. My state government sent out a sternly written letter on Thursday telling the county governments to use their vaccine supply and not lag behind because the state can tell they aren't giving out the vaccines. Apparently, some county governments aren't going full speed ahead and rather "stock piling" the vaccines.

@KCDiva wrote:I'm anxious to get the vaccine. I am 63 with no underlying health issues. I certainly want to wait my turn but it worries me when I hear that every one should be able to have one by June. I was hoping I would get one sooner. My 93 year old mother is in the hospital with Covid and will go to a nursing home. Kills me but it's best for her care. I hope to be able to see her soon. She's in quarantine now and we can't visit. You never know when it could be the last time you see someone you love.
I'm walking in the same shoes as you are @KCDiva. My LO is 92, and is now in her second (?) infection of Covid, following an interim infection of c. Diff.
I will do ANYTHING to get to her, and I'm frantic that s some power hitter will climb past me and get MY SHOT.
I have an 82 year old friend who has been in a nursing home since last December. I visited her 3-4 times a week, pre COVID. The last time I visited her in the nursing home was on March 13.
When I got home, there was a message on my voice mail saying that after 8:00 pm that day, no visitors would be allowed. Since then, she and every other person there has had no visitors.
I go about every two weeks, to drop off gifts and treats for her, but I am only allowed just inside the door to the reception area. If she charges her cell phone and can hear it ring, I get to talk to her. I couldn't talk to her for about three months because she " lost" her phone. I finally reached someone there who went into her room to locate it and charge it up. I can reach her about once a week.
@violann @KCDiva Be prepared to have a long wait even with the vaccine. Nursing homes are boarded up like Fort Knox.
I got a call last week asking for my permission to give my friend the Vaccine. I spoke to her yesterday and told her that a vaccine was on the way for her. She as happy about that, but not very understanding. She has no TV and no real understanding of what has been happening. She does get tested with " that stick up my nose" quite often. So far, so good.
God bless you ladies. I hope we can all safely visit our loved ones soon.

I wasn't challenging you, @willdob3, I am agreeing with you. I have spent such a long long time feeling hopeless, fearing I would miss "my turn", feeling as though the dear little crabapple who's ithe last of a family of eight will be gone before I can get inside the door......
I don't know of ANYONE who has the audacity of hoping that this will vanish. I will happily continue to perform all of the practices of caution and caring. To me, being vaccinated give me a little candle flame of hope that what is such a dark horizon can be lifted just enough for me to continue forward.
Trust me when I tell you that reality has hit me too hard to imagine anything more than just one little light.
