I once needed a root canal on one of the end teeth of a bridge. My dentist did it right thru the bridge,so now my bridge has a filling. Dental work is so expensive.

Concerning crowns popping off....be sure when you floss between teeth with crowns you pull the floss through , not down and out.   Also do not use anything  except string floss....no sticks etc.

@SeaMaiden

I didn't know this.  Thanks.

I have 3 porcelain crowns all done around the same time, 25 years or more ago.  Mine were due to stress on the tooth due to the way my silver fillings were put in when I was a teen after I got my braces off.  What my dentist at the time said was that the filling went in vertically and should have been done horizontally to go with the bite vs against the bite (or something like that).  It was more about how they did fillings at the time as they do them differently now.  The fillings caused tiny cracks over time.  Mine were not a priority, so, like you, I was able to wait and spread the work out and did one a year.

If you feel confident that you can see what needs to be fixed and you are confident that those are indeed your xrays, then I don't think you need a second opinion.  Usually all dentists know one another in an area, so I doubt a fellow dentist will even see you let alone go against what another dentist is recommending.  Plus I don't think your insurance will cover a second opinion for a crown.  I think they would only cover it for a major expense like implants.

I have many crowns and they hold up. The last crown I got a couple of years ago is made of Zirconia and my dentist told me that the Zirconia is a new material that they use for crowns and it lasts much longer than the previous material that they used for crowns. I also had mine done as I could afford to do them. It sounds like you are in good hands and that they are not trying to gouge you.

I have 2 crowns.  I had root canals first then crowns.  Both of my crowns have broken.  One broke after about 2 years was able to be repaired and has held up for years.

The other broke about 3 years after I got it, was repaired but broke a week later and had to be replaced.

I've had 4 crowns since I was in my 20s.  About 5 years ago one needed a root canal so had to be replaced.  Another popped off last year while on vacation.  That one had to be replaced too.

Thank you all so much for the info!  I am feeling much better about having to get them now knowing that they should last.

I have crowns and have had a good experience with them. Just be careful when flossing.

Well I spent 2 hours in the chair this morning getting my temporary crown. Oh boy...OUCH!

I can't believe how much pain I'm in and my dentist didn't give me any pain meds. She told me that for the next 24-48 hours I need to drink from a straw, no hot or cold liquids, and only soft foods.

I have to floss, no exceptions. I usually only floss a few times a week but now I must every day to ensure nothing gets under the temp crown.

Oh boy it hurts.

Smiley Sad

Hope you all had a good day though.

          I just happened to see this thread.   @JB116, I'm sorry... that kind of pain can be dreadful.   I really don't like giving specific advice about meds, including OTC.    Please call your dentist's office if they're still there or phone your pharmacist.    You shouldn't have to bear the pain with no help at all.   My pharmacist told me exactly which OTC pain meds to take for dental pain, a couple of them in a certain combination.    But she knows me, my medical history and allergies, other meds I take, that sort of thing, so what was fine for me might not be good for you.   Please make a call and find out what's best for you to use.   (((cyberhugs)))
