This might help understand what creatine is. I wrote and posted this info on a previous thread about creatine.
"The body has a supply of energy stores found throughout the cells. But in order for that energy to be used it needs to be converted to a usable form called ATP. That conversion to ATP involves creatine to make it happen. Muscles and the brain are the two areas in the body where ATP is mostly used. The brain uses the most ATP of all.
About half of the body's creatine comes from food and the other half is made in the liver and kidneys. Creatine is not a protein but is a chain of only three amino acids that make up its structure.
Creatine is not the same as creatinine. Just be aware of that while doing your research. Those two words look so much alike and it's easy to overlook their difference while scanning for articles."
I will add that taking creatine supps when the body doesn't actually need it is a waste. The creatine is used only when it's in demand. It will not build more muscle or make you smarter on it's own. Creatine in the body doesn't do anything until the muscles start burning energy. Otherwise it goes out to waste.

So, it helps the brain only if you're using your brain?

If you are under an extreme amount of mental stress or are severely sleep deprived then a creatine supp might be beneficial. Aging can cause normal creatine levels to drop but creatine supplementation hasn't been a proven solution to aid in brain health. It's all speculative at this point and needs more research.

There are a lot of myths surrounding creatine. Men use it primarily for performance body building. Women have other benefits. The opinion on creatine from doctors based on new studies has changed in regard to women.
Studies show for women it can have a positive effect on depression, gut health, brain metabolism, and also body building if that is a goal. The dosage for women is much lower than men.
Do your research, and you wil come to your own conclusions not anyones based here.
Supplements are not regulated so make sure you get them from a reputable source. As with anything you introduce to your diet consult your doctor.

That's usually part of the standard blood draw that your doctor orders. I would be shocked if you've never had your kidney numbers checked.
